Is it safe to ride or lunge a horse with ulcers while treating them?

If both your vet and farrier have approved light rides for Georgie, you might want to just try a short, easy ride in the arena, and then see how she does with plenty of rest in between. If she seems sound and isn't lame after, you can then see if she'll handle a gradual increase in activity, or if she requires more rest. A regular check-in with your vet and farrier afterwards to make sure there aren't any changes can also help you determine if you can continue with the rides over time.

Hi there. First it’s important to make sure that your saddle fits properly-you aren’t pinching when you tighten your girth or tightening too quickly-both of which can cause discomfort in your mare. It really is best to have her scoped by a vet to check for ulcers, as well as an oral exam to make sure there is no pain in the mouth-sometimes they just associate pain with riding and it doesn’t matter the source of the pain (saddle, bit, etc) they just know it hurts them. Gastrogard is usually what I try first for ulcers. It is commercially available in many stores as well as online. Hello. This is a possibility, especially if Rain has always stood quietly to be saddled before. First, I would try gently snugging up the cinch & walk her for a minute or two. Then cinch up another notch. Do this until your saddle is tight enough. If she tolerates this, & shows no further bad or uncomfortable behavior, then Rain may just be showing her displeasure at being cinched. Make sure there is no skin being pinched by picking up each front leg, & stretching it out in front of her. Hi there! Sounds like Star Trek has some pretty concerning problems going on. I assume from the question that he has been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. Royal Canin gastrointestinal diet is a good guality, bland, and easily digestible diet that he may benefit from long term. Many patients with gastrointestinal problems benefit from eating these bland diets life long. I would encourage you to visit with his veterinarian for a discussion about long term management. Often, follow up examinations and further testing (like fecal exams for parasites, endoscopy, or even biopsies) are needed to develop the best long term plan. I hope he continues to improve.

Hello, sorry to hear about Faith. If you think the sucralfate is making her feel sicker then you can chose to discontinue until you talk with your veterinarian tomorrow and discuss permanently discontinuing this medication. It's safe to give Danny this medication. Because it is used topically in his mouth, it is expected that some of it may be swallowed during treatment and the vet wouldn't prescribe it if it could cause seizures from ingestion. I would use this medication as prescribe by your vet, Danny will be ok :-)

Either may work to treat ulcers which are caused by bacterial infection. Pristine water quality is just as important, if not more so, than medication. Elevated ammonia or nitrite levels can be stressful as well as toxic. A stressed fish is more likely to become ill. Use a home test kit or submit a water sample for testing. Aim for 0 ppm ammonia and nitrites, with nitrates at 20 ppm or less. If your fish are salt tolerant, you can use aquarium salt (NOT table or Epsom salt) in conjunction with an antibiotic. Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon of water in a cup or two of tank water and gently pour it in. This will improve gill function, reduce stress, treat minor infection and aid in recovery. Treat for no more than 14 days then perform a partial water change to decrease salinity. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent stress or shock.
