My dog swallowed his prescribed tongue ulcer gel. Is it safe?

In the past in the UK we used to prescribe Antepsin syrup or tablets for gastric ulcers, in addition to analgesic medications (no antinflammatories !) and antiacids. It used to be a human medication so needed informed consent from the owners and compliance to the cascade (it could be used in cases where no other authorised animal medication was available). Unfortunately then there was a shortage in his availability and other medications had to be used on their own.. Antepsin, or sulcralfate, created a barrier between the ulcer and the acid content of the stomach. The antiacids now are still used, and their active drug is either omeprazole and/or ranitidine.

If there is a secondary infection associated with the ulcer than it will help. If the ulcer is caused by trauma from his tongue touching his teeth than it might not help completely. If there is a veterinary dentist in your area than you could have your dog evaluated to see if there is anything that can be done with the teeth to help prevent the problem.

He's in a lot of pain if he's pawing at his face, and you cannot leave him this way. He also needs to be treated for his seizures. Please take him into a vet now.

If you think the sucralfate is making her feel sicker then you can chose to discontinue until you talk with your veterinarian tomorrow and discuss permanently discontinuing this medication. Hi there. 1.5 mg per day is not a very high dose for a 14.5 pound dog, so I would not expect stopping the meds abruptly to cause any problems in this case :) As long as Lily is acting normal, there should be no reason for concern.

You are correct. Quadritop should not be used in the mouth, but only on top of the skin. You should definitely confront your veterinarian who prescribed it in this manner and express your concerns with the recommended treatment. And definitely discontinue giving this. It likely will cause severe stomach upset, so if seen then its best to give your kitty a bland diet of tuna and rice for a few days. If she seems more seriously affected, then its best to express your concerns with your vet for further treatment.
