Is it safe to ride my horse after a full pedal bone injury recovery?

Hello. If working your horse will not irritate or make the ulcers bleed, then light work would be appropriate. If your horse shows any pain or discomfort, & is reluctant to move comfortably, then stop & just allow the lesions to heal completely before continuing to use him. I would advise you to get an equine vet out to look at her as soon as you can. What you describe may be due to sacroiliac pain, but aspects of it such as problems placing her feet would make me wonder regarding a neurological issue. I would advise you not to ride her until the vet has checked her out, for your own safety and to avoid worsening any problem. You can walk her in hand. I hope it is nothing too serious and you find resolution quickly.

As long as the wound appears to be healing, he should be fine to return to pasture. Please continue to monitor the wound daily for any evidence of swelling or drainage. If you observe either, please contact your veterinarian.

Neurologic issues can take time. It is great that she is up and bearing weight on her own, dogs are so amazing. Hopefully she had xrays to look for a spinal/pelvic fracture, collapsed disc space, etc. as these would be important to rule out as well. You will need to give her potentially even months to know what her new normal with be. Hopefully she will at some point be deficit free or only have a mild deficit but it is too soon to tell. Keep working with her. Hopefully your vet has recommended a physical therapy/rehab plan for her. If not, you could request referral to a rehab therapist. That's a fair question, but not one I could fully answer without knowing her case as well as your veterinarian. I'm sure the main reason they want to x-ray your dog again is to check that it healed properly before advising about walking her again. Sometimes these fractures don't heal and will need further treatment. The fact that she doesn't seem painful is encouraging that it has healed well, but it's still possible that it didn't. I think it would at-least be worth it to have her rechecked by your vet. We can often tell a great deal from physical exam. I would then ask your vet how necessary they think the x-ray is. It would be good to ask what the potential complications are and what would be the treatment for those complications. For instance: If Nahla had a non-healing fracture, they might recommend surgery to correct it. If surgery is not a feasible option for you (because of money), then the x-ray would not really be worthwhile. Vets usually offer the best treatment recommendations for their patients, then scale it back as necessary. That's likely the situation here. I hope that helps and Nahla is all healed.

As long as she's receiving regular foot care and examinations from a farrier, I would not be too concerned. If she seems in pain, or your farrier is recommending shoes to help protect her feet, I would follow their advice.

Hello. I do not believe the color of the hoof indicates strength in the foot overall. Is she shod? You may need to have a farrier out to see if she needs a reset or perhaps pads added to protect the sole. If she continues to come up lame, despite plenty of rest, you really need a vet to come out & do a through lameness exam. This will involve a good physical exam of the leg & foot, blocking the leg/foot to isolate exactly where the pain is coming from & possibly x-rays. She may have not completely recovered from the bruise, or there may be other changes in the hoof/leg at work here.
