What diet helps a greyhound with a stomach ulcer heal and prevent?

Your best bet is to find a sensitive stomach or GI health formula. Purina and science diet have an over the counter formula. You can also add a probiotic to help. If that does not help then you can try a prescription diet which is more expensive. They have specific easy to digest formula such as science diet ID or Purina EN or you may have to start a food trial. A food trial can be a different food with a single carb and single protein such as duck and potato or rabbit and sweet potato to see if a food allergy is a problem

Honestly we rarely have to put these dogs on a special diet but if I had to pick a diet I would say high fiber which may help with GI motility. A prescription diet from your vet like Hill's w/d would be best. I would use the canned version. I am a bit worried that the diagnosis is not correct. There are many other reasons why a dog could be vomiting bile (parasites, partial GI obstruction, GI motility disorder, cancer, endocrine disorder, food intolerance/allergy, etc). Did he have any blood testing done? X-rays? I think you have already done what should be tried for simple bilious vomiting syndrome. Since he hans't improved and is actually worse, I strongly recommend you consult with your vet about more testing. If IBD is suspected, we should always try out a limited ingredient hypoallergenic diet (such as rabbit, venison, or kangaroo), for a minimum of 8 weeks with NO other treats or table scraps. However, since Chi's appetite is not the greatest, it will be a challenge to find a hypoallergenic diet that she likes. It sounds like the medications that were prescribed are appropriate for the suspected illness. Carafate is a gastroprotectant that is used to minimize gastric ulcers - it should not worsen diarrhea symptoms. Two other suggestions which I would discuss with your vet: 1) try a different type of anti-diarrhea antibiotic, such as tylosin. 2) consider weekly treatments of vitamin B12, as many dogs with IBD are B12-deficient. 3) try again with steroid therapy such as prednisolone, or try a different immunosuppresant such as cyclosporine. Hi, is she on medications for her stomach ulcer ? Ulcers are sooooo painful so any food will make her uncomfortable. I think she should ate least be on Omeprazole .. regarding food a natural diet such as Almo Nature would be my choice ! Best wishes

In the past in the UK we used to prescribe Antepsin syrup or tablets for gastric ulcers, in addition to analgesic medications (no antinflammatories !) and antiacids. It used to be a human medication so needed informed consent from the owners and compliance to the cascade (it could be used in cases where no other authorised animal medication was available). Unfortunately then there was a shortage in his availability and other medications had to be used on their own.. Antepsin, or sulcralfate, created a barrier between the ulcer and the acid content of the stomach. The antiacids now are still used, and their active drug is either omeprazole and/or ranitidine.

If she's acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours, then feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to see if this helps - often, if the problem is due to a minor upset stomach or something she may have eaten, this plan works very well. If there is no improvement in the diarrhea in the next 2-3 days, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as these can be signs of a more serious problem.
