Is it cruel to race a horse barefoot if her hooves are healthy?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

If a horse used for harness racing has never been shod in its life and isn’t perfectly fine without sore feet do you think it’s okay to continue racing her without shoes? Some people say it’s cruel for a horse To be barefoot but netty has never been shod not once in her entire life as a vet do you think it’s cruel for netty to be barefoot? She’s 8 years old with healthy hooves.

As long as she's receiving regular foot care and examinations from a farrier, I would not be too concerned. If she seems in pain, or your farrier is recommending shoes to help protect her feet, I would follow their advice.
