My horse has no shelter from extreme weather. Is this neglect?

The hoof cracks are not that bad in the photos. Cracking can be due to any number of things: * hoof being too dry * injury to the hoof * poor nutrition Your farrier can help you more regarding what care you need to do for the hooves. There are no quick fixes. There are biotin supplements you can use and hoof dressings but I honestly don't think they work that great. They won't hurt though if you want to use them. Getting him a good diet is the most important. The hair should grow back over time with a good diet. He probably just rubbed it off. Keep in mind that all horses, especially rescues, need to have their teeth checked. I suggest you have a vet out to examine the teeth. If there is an issue he can't chew or digest his food properly.

A roof that does not leak and walls to protect against ran is needed. You will have to change the cedar chips out regularly and make sure to add a bed or blanket to snuggle in for extra warmth. Ideally on freezing nights you should bring him in and confine him to a garage or laundry room or bathroom if able

Dog: I personally recommend that they live indoors, it's safer for them inside and they always will be sheltered from the weather. If the dog is kept outdoors, the kennel needs to be big enough that they can stand in it, turn around, lay down, and stretch out as well as move around. There should be a roof on it, and the sides should be made of a metal mesh to allow air flow. Horse: Typically horses are kept in stalls. A 12x12 foot stall is suitable for a 1000+ pound horse. Rabbit: They are kept in hutches or cages, and the minimum recommended living space is is 12 square feet (1.1 square meters) with the addition of a larger area of 32 square feet for exercise. Bird: They are kept in cages, and it should be big enough to allow the bird to fly freely through the cage and have plenty of room for toys and enrichment.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Odie is super cute! If Odie is an outside dog then he needs shelter from the rain and the cold. Provide a dog house that is dry and protects from the wind, rain and snow (if you get snow). You can even look in to safe heat sources if it gets that cold in your area. I do not recommend not having shelter for outside dogs. He shouldn't get sick with proper shelter. I hope this helps and good luck!

You should do a 5 day Panacur PowerPac dewormer. I'm not sure where you can buy it there. It is the only dewormer to kill encysted small strongyles which can cause ill thrift and decreased weight. We do not know what products you have available to you in South Africa. Your local vet would know. In the U.S. we use Beet Pulp quite a bit to help horses gain weight. If he wild he may be burning off all the calories he is taking in. It is best to have him gelded if he is not going to be used for breeding. That will also help him to gain weight.

Wild horses are different from domestic horses in that they are not tamed and they are used to harsh conditions. Domestic horses are bred for specific reasons, such as hunting, jumping, dressage, western riding, etc., so they have different requirements than wild horses. They won't be as hardy, so a winter blanket may be needed to help keep them warm in the winter. It's best to have them wear a winter coat and to provide shelter from the cold weather.
