Why would my horse need to be quarantined for certain diseases?

The only reasonable reason a dog would be placed in quarantine in most countries is if he has bitten a human and he isn't vaccinated for rabies. in some countries, such as New Zealand for example, a month long quarantine is usually mandatory for every dog entering the country from somewhere else.

It is potentially possible for you to transport infections on clothing or equipment but general hygiene and washing of hands/clothing between groups of horses makes this less likely. Many infections are readily spread amongst horses and i would not recommend mixing them directly until he has been fully vaccinated

A Coggins test is a blood test that detects antibodies to the disease, Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). It is a virus related to the HIV virus in humans and can result in anemia, edema, or weight loss and muscle wasting. Once infected, a horse remains infected even though it may not show symptoms. It is impossible to tell from the picture, but I would have a vet out immediately. I would quarantine that horse and make it a very strict and severe quarantine. Horses who come in from kill pens unfortunately carry with them a host of issues that can do a lot of damage if not properly handled before they come to your property. In the future, it is always best to have any animal coming from a kill pen quarantined at a separate location for 30 days before they even step foot on your property. You will need to watch all your other horses for symptoms and quarantine them as well if they start to show symptoms. Make sure to bleach clean all areas and wear protective gear. Clean boots in a bleach tub when leaving his stall and to play it super safe, I would designate one person to deal with the sick horse and someone else to deal with the others until a vet can confirm or deny the strangles diagnosis.

This is because of the Rabies virus which is fatal and can be transmitted to humans. a dog with rabies can only infect others once the virus has reached the brain and salivary gland, from this point on the dog will die within 10 days. the purpose of the quarantine is to make sure your dog survives the 10 days, if he doesn't then the people he has bitten need to have a series of vaccinations/serum against rabies in order to survive.

If your country is Rabies free then the bat likely doesn't have Rabies either. I would trust your countries health officials on this. The bat would have had to get it's saliva in to your dog via a bit or her mucous membranes (gums, eyes, cut on skin). In the US an unvaccinated pet that may be exposed to rabies is quarantined for 6 months because that is the maximum amount of time it can take for rabies to become contagious or obvious. It can happen sooner. Rabies is only contagious when it is in the final stages, in the salivary glands. Once it is in the salivary glands the animal will show signs of rabies with in 10 days.
