Why would my dog need quarantine? Rabies, travel, or other reasons?

This is because of the Rabies virus which is fatal and can be transmitted to humans. a dog with rabies can only infect others once the virus has reached the brain and salivary gland, from this point on the dog will die within 10 days. the purpose of the quarantine is to make sure your dog survives the 10 days, if he doesn't then the people he has bitten need to have a series of vaccinations/serum against rabies in order to survive.

The problem here is that there is a suspicion that your dog could have rabies since she did not have her vaccines in time and bit the vet, This is why she is in quarantine. There are two ways to find out whether the dog is rabid: 1) quarantine for 10 to 15 days or to euthanize the dog and have the brain examined in a laboratory. SInce you went to the vet to have Princess euthanized anyway, I do not understand why they quarantined her and did not euthanize her and sent in the head. Unfortunately they will not give you the dog before quarantine is up.

You just want to keep an eye on him and not expose him to anything that will make him get sick in the 10 day window that may confuse if he has Rabies or something else. If your country is Rabies free then the bat likely doesn't have Rabies either. I would trust your countries health officials on this. The bat would have had to get it's saliva in to your dog via a bit or her mucous membranes (gums, eyes, cut on skin). In the US an unvaccinated pet that may be exposed to rabies is quarantined for 6 months because that is the maximum amount of time it can take for rabies to become contagious or obvious. It can happen sooner. Rabies is only contagious when it is in the final stages, in the salivary glands. Once it is in the salivary glands the animal will show signs of rabies with in 10 days. Hello. If Bella received a proper vaccination from her veterinarian, then there is no need to worry at all about your sister getting rabies. If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. Here in the US, an unvaccinated dog is quarantined at a holding facility ( often a veterinary facility ) for 10 days. If no symptoms, then no need to worry. Great question! Funnily enough, I faced this same problem when I moved from the US to New Zealand. I also had a dog who had a problem with separation anxiety who had to be in quarantine for four weeks. When in quarantine, Tinna will be kept in a large cage and having an enclosed space may help with her separation anxiety. You can also let the people running the quarantine know she has problems with separation anxiety, and you can see if they will let you put a DAP diffuser in her cage. This diffuser helps dogs with anxiety. You can also talk to your vet before you go about putting her on an anti-anxiety medication which the quarantine people can administer to her as needed. My own dog was just fine traveling and being in quarantine, and I hope Tinna will be the same :-)
