What's this bump in my horse's eye? When should I see a vet?

Hi and thanks for your request. It is very likely to be due to an impacted/obstructed meibomian gland, which could either resolve by itself or with some anti-inflammatory drops. Tumors are possible as well and only by a quick check up these could be differentiate clinically. I do not think there is any need for an earlier check. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bumps on eye-lids can be cysts, but they can also be other masses like tumors. For this reason getting it checked is recommended. In the mean-time, I would check for squinting, moving away from your hand when you go to pet him on that side of the face, redness/blueness/whiteness of the eye-ball itself that is different from the other eye, or scratching/pawing at the eye. If any of these are occuring, then I would take Marley to a vet. If he isn't too concerned about it, and isn't squinting or moving away from you, and is only minimally pawing at it, then I would recommend getting an E-collar (you can pick one up from any emergency clinic without an appointment as it is now late in Australia), to prevent ongoing trauma to the eye which can get much much worse with scratching. I would suggest to have it checked as it can rub against cornea and create discomfort and possibly corneal damage in the long run. This could be potentially rubbing against cornea and in the long term cause both chronic irritation/inflammation (the cornea can get darker than normal) and possibly corneal ulceration. It is hard to see much from the photo but I do think you should have your vet out to check Shez. That opacity on the cornea could be a fungal or bacterial infection. It could also be a sign of glaucoma (high pressure in the eye). So, yes, I do think you need to have your vet look at that eye. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
