My goat has green scours after eating new grass. What should I do?

It certainly is possible if he ate a large amount. A sudden change in diet can sometimes lead to diarrhea. Keep him well hydrated and make sure he doesn't get into any more chicken feed. Offer his regular diet. You may want to keep him separate from other goats if you have more. If the diarrhea persists, consider submitting a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth.

Your goat sounds like he may have some trouble with his digestive system. Goats do well on high-quality grass pasture or grass hay. I would be very cautious with any alfalfa or grain, as these items can cause bloat in goats as they are very rich. Some burping/eructation is normal in goats, so what you are noticing may be normal for him. Also, make sure to have him dewormed as goats often have intestinal parasites. Hope that helps!

I am so sorry to hear about Fred! Unfortunately, the only way to know what caused Fred's death with any certainty would be a full autopsy by a veterinarian or a veterinary pathologist. In terms of diarrheal diseases in young goats, the cause is typically parasites. Scouring, aka profuse diarrhea, is a common cause of death in young sheep and goats. It can cause rapid dehydration, intestinal bleeding, and nutritional imbalances. My advise to you would be to alert the people from whom you received Fred to see if they have any other animals that might be sick. They should be warned about what is happened, and might even offer to help pay for an autopsy. If you have any intentions of doing this, Fred's remains need to be kept cool in a refrigerator (or if the only option, a freezer). If there is any diarrhea still around on your property, I would bring some of this in to your veterinarian and have it tested for parasites (including coccidia, a very parasite in young goats). Once again, I am very sorry that Fred is gone. I hope you are able to figure out what happened.

Sounds like either enterotoxemia (Clostridium spp) or parasites like tapeworms. What parasites did you treat for? Tapeworms need a special deworming medication as they are not killed with a general dewormer. Are you vaccinating against Clostridial diseases? If you have a local vet, I suggest you consult with them.

She may have a grain bloat, have ingested something toxic or have an infection. I recommend having a vet take a look at her as soon as possible. In the meantime try to walk her a bit and she is she is interested in browsing or chewing any hay.

Hello. There are many reasons for scours in a calf, but the first thing to investigate is the presence of intestinal parasites. If you have not had a fecal analysis done to look for parasites like coccidia, this would be the first step. I would recommend that you have Karoly checked out by a vet. There are some mineral or nutritional deficiencies that can cause a goat to walk abnormally, but do not always cause a runny nose. That could be caused by just being sick in general or indicate a respiratory infection. His urine may smell bad from dehydration. All of his symptoms are pretty vague right now so a physical examination by a vet would be the next step to see what is ailing him so that an appropriate treatment can be started.
