My goat has foul burps and stomach rumbles, but eats fine. Why?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From your picture, the appearance of his rumen seems pretty normal. A healthy, well-fed goat can seem to be quite bloated. If he is acting normal, you have already done all the correct things. Limit his grazing on lush pastures, give him only a small handful of grain once you start him back, and get him off the alfalfa & on a good prairie grass hay. This & fresh water is all most goats will need. Take care.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If her temp is high and she is painful or bloated in her abdomen, this could be a life threatening emergency. She may have a grain bloat, have ingested something toxic or have an infection. I recommend having a vet take a look at her as soon as possible. In the meantime try to walk her a bit and she is she is interested in browsing or chewing any hay.

Hi there. Our goat's bleat can tell us a lot about how he feels. Coughing in goats is something we always address. Sometimes goats cough because of dust, etc that is on their hay, especially if they are fed indoors and air circulation is poor. Lungworms, or parasites in the lungs can also cause goats to cough. Goats can also be affected by things like pneumonia, respiratory infections, etc. Usually these things are accompanied by nasal discharge, or discharge around the eyes that looks a bit thickened and not of normal color. Bloat can make goats extremely painful and their bleats will be very minimal and shallow-make sure you're checking for any signs that his belly is swollen. Monitor your friend for normal urination, defecation, eating, and drinking as well-the lack of any of these things can be quite serious for goats and may require a trip to your regular veterinarian.

I would recommend that you have Karoly checked out by a vet. There are some mineral or nutritional deficiencies that can cause a goat to walk abnormally, but do not always cause a runny nose. That could be caused by just being sick in general or indicate a respiratory infection. His urine may smell bad from dehydration. All of his symptoms are pretty vague right now so a physical examination by a vet would be the next step to see what is ailing him so that an appropriate treatment can be started.

Sounds like either enterotoxemia (Clostridium spp) or parasites like tapeworms. What parasites did you treat for? Tapeworms need a special deworming medication as they are not killed with a general dewormer. Are you vaccinating against Clostridial diseases? If you have a local vet, I suggest you consult with them.

Hi there. Bloating in goats can be an emergency and will require veterinary assistance. If she is not eating or drinking, it is time to take her in. Depending on how bad it is-they may be able to pass a stomach tube or it may be surgical and require a puncture of the rumen to relieve pressure. It worries me that she is not urinating. This can happen if she is severely dehydrated but also in diseases like renal (kidney) failure (she is older) or she could have a blockage from urinary calculi. Hello. You have perfectly normal kids. The rumen is on the left side, so this will naturally bulge a bit more than the right side.
