My goat has a fever, stomach pain, and is drooling. What to do?

Sounds like either enterotoxemia (Clostridium spp) or parasites like tapeworms. What parasites did you treat for? Tapeworms need a special deworming medication as they are not killed with a general dewormer. Are you vaccinating against Clostridial diseases? If you have a local vet, I suggest you consult with them.

Hi there. Bloating in goats can be an emergency and will require veterinary assistance. If she is not eating or drinking, it is time to take her in. Depending on how bad it is-they may be able to pass a stomach tube or it may be surgical and require a puncture of the rumen to relieve pressure. It worries me that she is not urinating. This can happen if she is severely dehydrated but also in diseases like renal (kidney) failure (she is older) or she could have a blockage from urinary calculi. Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. From your picture, the appearance of his rumen seems pretty normal. A healthy, well-fed goat can seem to be quite bloated. If he is acting normal, you have already done all the correct things. Limit his grazing on lush pastures, give him only a small handful of grain once you start him back, and get him off the alfalfa & on a good prairie grass hay. This & fresh water is all most goats will need. Take care.

I would definitely be concerned enough to call a vet out for this. If she was in labor, then you would have seen signs of this (swollen vulva, fluid discharge, etc.) and it would not cause them to act this debilitated. I recommend getting her seen by a vet as soon as possible, so they can determine what the problem is. I hope that helps and Blue gets better soon.

Check her temperature. If she has a fever, call out your farm vet. Potential causes include infection, vitamin/mineral deficiency (namely vitamin E and selenium), parasites (the most worrisome being meningeal worm) or trauma. Keep her warm and as stress free as possible. If necessary, rig up a sling to help her get around. The easiest is a towel slung underneath her behind the front limbs. Without an exam, it is difficult to determine definitively what is happening. If her symptoms are worsening, consider an emergency vet call out or trip to the nearest veterinary ER.

Your goat sounds like he may have some trouble with his digestive system. Goats do well on high-quality grass pasture or grass hay. I would be very cautious with any alfalfa or grain, as these items can cause bloat in goats as they are very rich. Some burping/eructation is normal in goats, so what you are noticing may be normal for him. Also, make sure to have him dewormed as goats often have intestinal parasites. Hope that helps!

I would recommend that you have Karoly checked out by a vet. There are some mineral or nutritional deficiencies that can cause a goat to walk abnormally, but do not always cause a runny nose. That could be caused by just being sick in general or indicate a respiratory infection. His urine may smell bad from dehydration. All of his symptoms are pretty vague right now so a physical examination by a vet would be the next step to see what is ailing him so that an appropriate treatment can be started.
