When should I trim my dwarf hamster's nails, and how do I do it?

You can either take her to your veterinarian for a nail trim or try it yourself. You will want to purchase child/ infant toe nail trimmers. It is a little difficult to judge based on this picture but if you can see the teeth when the mouth is closed then yes, he will need to have them trimmed. All hamster’s have continuously growing incisors that need to be worn down frequently. If the bite is off then the teeth will no wear properly and they will need to be trimmed. I would recommend having the teeth trimmed by your veterinarian because it can be a little tricky.

You can buy Trimmers at any pet store, but also human toe nail trimmers turned sideways work great too. Make sure you just get the white tips, do not get close to the pink quick. If they have black nails use the white nails as a guide on how far to cut the back ones. You probably don’t need to trim them more than every 2 months or so.

The nails of your guinea pig are borderline long, . The nails help your guinea pig to have traction on smooth surfaces. This is important, as a guinea pig is a prey animal and needs to get away quickly , if necessary. You can use normal nail clippers to cut Milo's nails. Make sure you inspect the nails thoroughly and do not cut into the quick (where the blood vessel runs). It may be best to have a vet tech at your vet's show you how to do this properly.

Your vet should be able to trim Cookie's teeth. Some hamsters need this done routinely (every 2-3 months) but you may be able to prevent it from happening again by giving him plenty of things to chew on.
