Why did my pet shiver after being warm and covered by a blanket?

Shivering can be a sign of pain, nausea, or a fever. Muscle tremors can look like shivering and can occur with some toxins or neurologic diseases. If the shivering continues I'd recommend having Zoey examined by a veterinarian.

You mentioned in a previous question that Noushi was limping, so the shivering could be from pain or it could be a fever. You can see a slight fever after getting vaccines, but that should go away. I'd keep her indoors, keep her warm and quiet, and rest her. If she is still acting this way in the morning, then get her checked out by a vet. Best of luck!

If she is unvaccinated for distemper, I would potentially consider this as a possibility but in older animals, distemper is not commonly seen. She may be uncomfortable from something (painful) or an infection / systemic disease. Hello! I'm sorry to hear that Eleanor might not be feeling well. There are several things that I think of when I hear about dogs that are trembling or shaking. First, dogs that tremble and shake may be experiencing pain. Conditions like luxating patellas (kneecaps that pop out of place) and back injuries come to mind with smaller dogs like Bichons and Shih-tzus. You may not have seen the initial injury, but if they "tweak" an old or chronic injury, it can make them shake, pant, and want to be clingy, as they don't understand why they are hurting. Next, behavior changes in middle-aged dogs could be caused by metabolic disorders, like hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease. I would also expect to see other symptoms with these disorders, like weight changes and a poor hair coat, so if you see any other physical changes, this could account for Eleanor's shaking. Lastly, stress can also cause shaking and trembling behavior (like from storms or major construction going on in the neighborhood). I definitely recommend having Eleanor evaluated by a veterinarian for pain and/or other disorders before chalking her trembling up to a behavioral issue, as many conditions like pain and hypothyroidism can be managed with treatment, and she'll be much happier for it. She is probably shivering because her body is trying to adjust after losing so much food and fluid when she vomited. Try to keep her calm and comfortable for now. She could be experiencing pain somewhere or even anxiety for some reason. Her veterinarian will do a thorough examination and assess her pain. From there, treatment and any necessary diagnostics can be discussed. Occasionally I have seen dogs with upper respiratory tract infections display odd behaviors at home instead of the standard coughing. Her veterinarian will check her throat.
