Why is my pet rat not eating after I trimmed her overgrown teeth?

All you can do is supportive care if you are unable to get her to a vet. This means syringe feeding food and liquids: Liquids: * dilute human electrolyte solution * soy milk * plain water Foods: * human baby food (they seem to really like peas, turkey and mixed veggie) * baby cereal * applesauce Try to get organic or ones with low sugar. If necessary, have your veterinarian trim the teeth then provide plenty of chew toys to prevent recurrence. Feed a commercial pelleted or block diet supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables. You can also offer food such as pasta, beans and boiled egg in small amounts. Take her out of her cage for some playtime several times daily. This will give her a break from a small cage as well as provide a bonding experience for the both of you.

It is not as critical to provide an additional chewing substrate for rats as it might be for other rodents, so if Roux does not seem to enjoy the sticks, you do not have to provide them. You might offer her another type of rat food made by Mazuri. This comes in a biscuit form that she might enjoy gnawing on. In addition, a treat such as yogurt or dried fruit treats manufactured specifically for rodents should be provided 2-3 times a week. Hello. The gnawing action of a rodents teeth will naturally keep them trimmed. Occasionally, due to a defect in the tooth alignment, an incisor can grow unchecked. These teeth need to be trimmed periodically. Teach you pets to allow you to examine their teeth & as long as they seem to "fit" or mesh together ( & we are only concerned about the front incisors ), they will be fine. Based on what you are describing it does sound as if Lucy is very ill. I would recommend either having her rechecked at your veterinarian or asking for a referral to an exotic capitalistic that can perform more specialized tests on small mammals like blood work, x-rays, and ultrasounds. Based on the age of your rat she may have something more serious going on like an internal infection or cancer. In the meantime, try to encourage Lucy to eat as best you can by offering her her favorite foods and/or syringe feeding her some baby food.
