My rat is in pain and not eating. How can I help her without a vet?

When you trimmed them at home, you may have cracked one of the teeth or made them jagged- this would cause her pain or rub on her tongue or cheeks.. Also, sometimes they have other teeth in back that grow long that you can't see. She needs to have a vet look at the back of her mouth with a scope to see what is happening in there and then give her some pain meds that are safe for rats. In the meantime, keep trying to feed her soft food like baby food, cooked egg, non dairy yogurt, oatmeal etc to coax her to eat.

I am sorry to hear about Remy. Unfortunately without a vet I don't think there is much to do for Remy besides being sure he is provided with a nice soft/comfortable area to sleep and being sure there aren't areas in his cage he could fall (such as a tall shelf or box) and monitoring to be sure he is eating and drinking. If he is having trouble getting around then be sure he has easy access to food and water. If he isn't moving on his own you may need to offer him water via a syringe and place his food right in front of him. If he isn't improving you may need to travel to wherever a vet is located closest to you. Best of luck.

Based on what you are describing it does sound as if Lucy is very ill. I would recommend either having her rechecked at your veterinarian or asking for a referral to an exotic capitalistic that can perform more specialized tests on small mammals like blood work, x-rays, and ultrasounds. Based on the age of your rat she may have something more serious going on like an internal infection or cancer. In the meantime, try to encourage Lucy to eat as best you can by offering her her favorite foods and/or syringe feeding her some baby food. I'm sorry to hear that Willow isn't feeling well. Unfortunately, if you want to try to treat her, she really needs to see a vet who treats exotics. They will listen to her heart and lungs and may take an x-ray of her chest. She could have an infection, or could have an issue with her heart or lungs that is causing respiratory distress without an infection. Cost depends wildly with location, but if you call the clinic they can give you a price for an exam and then an estimate for full diagnostics/treatments as they have more information. I would except the final cost to be at least 2-4 times the exam price (more if she's more ill). There is really nothing to do at home for respiratory issues, especially having no idea what's causing it.

Hello there! This little rat does not look very good at all. Unfortunately, there are many different diseases that outdoor rats can have - some that are zoonotic (this means transmissable to humans and other animals, so be sure to wash well after handling him) - and without a complete workup by a vet, it's not likely that he's going to survive the next couple of days. Even if you do bring him to the vet, there might not be much that can be done for him at this point. He is thin, he has a hunched body posture (an indicator of pain and severe stress), and his sunken, squinted eyes indicate dehydration. The respiratory symptoms you mentioned are very common in wild rat species, and are usually fatal. I highly suggest that you contact a veterinarian and consider humane euthanasia for this guy. You could also try to call a wildlife rehabber, but only if you can get in touch with one that will take the rat immediately. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like you've done everything you can at home. If you can't get him to the vet right away, keep him warm and quiet. He might be suffering from a severe respiratory infection, which is the most common medical condition in rats. you need to take him to the vet urgently in order to get treated, he will need antibiotics and medications to help him breath.

Rats have a gestation period of 21-23 days. Have her examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating pocket pets. He or she may be able to confirm pregnancy or diagnose illness or injury. Check her teeth to rule out overgrowth or malocclusion. Either could cause her to go off her food. The antibiotic (Baytril?) may also cause some GI upset.
