Why is my rabbit thumping its feet and how can I best train it?

Rabbits will thump for reasons other than fear. His thumping may be due to excitement at seeing you. Move slowly and speak softly around him. Try to announce yourself as you enter the room. Offer a small treat or snack each time so he associates good things with your entering the room.

Some buns are not into tricks. The easiest way to work on this is to find a high-value treat he loves, like a small piece of banana, and ask him to stand up on his hindlimbs to eat it. Ouch, poor Thumper! His nail may have caught on something and gotten torn. This is very painful, and the remaining quick and nail bed can be susceptible to infection. Thumper may be chewing at his foot for either reason. I recommend having him seen by a vet, to make sure his foot otherwise seems ok, ensure there is no infection developing, and get him put on appropriate pain medication. You can have his nails trimmed at that time as well - nails often get torn if they are getting too long, so your vet can help trim those down if you haven't been trimming them yourself. I suspect she wags her tail in an attempt to squirm away. I would take it very slow, and not attempt to pick her up if she is uncomfortable. Start by gently petting her, offering her treats and speaking to her softly. Eventually, you may be able to put her in your lap. The last step is to get her used to being picked up. Always support her bum with one hand, and support her back by putting it against your chest. Rabbits have very strong legs, and can injure their back or legs if they kick out in a panic.
