My rabbit's testicles are long. Neuter for cancer? Will he change?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My rabbit has unusually long/seemingly distended testicles. He has had this all his life, but it worries me because they are visible and even are visible from behind when he sits down. He does not seem to be in any pain, but I am worried that this could be a target for testicular cancer in the future. Would neutering him be a good option? I have heard mixed reviews; some even saying that it changed their animal’s personality completely. He is a super sweet boy and I don’t want him to change.

Rabbits do usually have pretty long testicles, and testicular cancer is very uncommon in rabbits. I typically don’t neuter them unless they are spraying urine and the owners want it to stop, or if they will be cohabiting with females. It is definitely not wrong to neuter by any means, but the risk of testicular cancer is low. I hope this helps! Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

My rabbit's testicles are big and low. Is this normal before neuter?

Rabbit testicles tend to normally be quite big and hang low. This is usually not a problem, so no need to move the appointment up any earlier unless you see an increase in redness or injury to the area. I hope that helps and all is well with River.

Is neutering a must for my single rabbit if vets aren't experienced?

There have been studies that have proven an extended life span in dogs and cats that are neutered but I do not think there have been any such studies in rabbits. However, we do know that neutering can prevent certain cancers like in the prostate and testicles. That being said, I think it is more important that Julius is safe and if you do not feel like there is someone that can safely neuter him, I would probably avoid it. I hope this helps. This species has very prominent testicles, and the sparse fur that is present on the surface of the scrotum often makes them look even larger. I cannot appreciate any abnormalities on the surfaces of either testicle with the photos that you have attached either. My 3-month bunny's testicle hasn't dropped. Should I deworm him?

Thanks for reaching out about Kaju and including a photo. Some testicles are slower to descend than others so give it a few more weeks/months. After that, a retained testicle can be a problem, as if remains in the abdominal cavity can become neoplastic and will require surgical correction. As for deworming, it really depends on the parasite and the concentration load. Good luck.

Why is my neutered rabbit's genital area swollen after surgery?

Thanks for reaching out about Basil. If there is swelling around the genitals and he is already neutered, a veterinary visit is highly recommended as soon as possible. If he was castrated recently, there is a concern over an abscess or seroma in the scrotum or a hernia. A hernia could be a medical emergency, if intestinal tract has herniated.
