Why is my neutered rabbit's genital area swollen after surgery?

Hi, it looks like a potential hernia from his previous neutering wound on the scrotum, but it is difficult to tell from sure from this picture only. I would recommend to see another vet with lots of experience/specialised in exotics to give you the best advice. I think it would be better to have it treated as to leave it would just cause ulceration to the area by being in contact with urine and feaces. Hope this helps

I would not recommend bathing any animal within 14 days after any surgery. If you see a little blood and can dab it with a clean damp cloth that is ok. If there is excessive bleeding, discharge, bruising, swelling, or if Fezzik is licking or biting at the site you should contact your veterinarian who may elect to treat with antibiotics, pain medications, or help you come up with a plan to prevent him from bothering the surgical site. It is not uncommon, however for there to be a small amount of redness and inflammation, even a few drops of blood at a surgical site for a few days after surgery. Good luck with Fezzick!

I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to make sure that there is no infection and to See if the incision needs to be revised or not. Swelling in this area can be caused by inflammation, decreased lymphatic fluid flow, fluid building up in the belly, among a few other things. Since this sounds like it started very quickly, I would recommend that Rascal get checked out by a vet today to see what can be causing the swelling. It is unlikely that it is related to him being previously neutered.

It’s possible that Gunner may have an inguinal hernia where there is a rift in the abdominal wall near the genitalia where intestines are able to protrude out. This can be a life threatening condition where the intestines may become strangulated/twisted and start to become necrotic. Other possibilities include scrotal hematomas (the empty scrotum filling up with blood) and abscesses (pockets of infection). As he is painful, the safest option would be to take him to an emergency veterinary hospital. If it is a hernia, emergency surgery would likely be indicated. Good luck!

He may have a bleeding disorder and the scrotum may be full of blood again. It may also be infected or inflamed. Do not let your cat lick the scrotum as it irritates it and may introduce infection. If the swelling is cool, you can just observe it and over time it should shrink again and the body will have reabsorbed the blood. If the swelling is hot or painful or red, then you will need to take your cat back to the vet for a recheck.

Although elderly, if he is fit and well and testicular issues are confirmed then yes, castration would be recommended. You should contact your vet to discuss gabis options in light of previous and current issues
