My male rabbit has a swollen, red testicle. What should I do?

Thanks for reaching out about Snowbell. This is probably not a simple condition so a veterinary visit needs to be scheduled, even if not experts in rabbits. A swollen testicle can be an infection, tumor or other, but due to the nature of rabbit pus, just antibiotics rarely sure this. Recommendation is probably castration. As for the leg, radiographs are probably needed to determine what is going on, fracture/dislocation/spinal problems. Each has different treatments. Good luck.

There is a problem with both testicles. The hard and black areas are areas of necrosis (tissue death). This is very serious. Likely due to an infection of some sort. It is very hard for us to recommend treatment for someone to use in a country we are unfamiliar with. I have no idea what products you have available to use. I checked Amazon and it looks like you can get Betadine Ointment 5%. I suggest you apply a thin layer of this ointment twice a day. If it starts to look worse at any time or it does not resolve he needs to see a vet. Be sure his cage is clean and dry at all times. Sitting in urine can cause this type of infection.

It may be inflammation and/or infection due to urine scalding. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits for diagnosis and treatment. You can use plain, unscented baby wipes or pet wipes to gently clean his abdominal area. Do not bathe him as it can be stressful and may complicate any underlying condition. Use the wipes and dry him thoroughly afterwards Keep him on clean, dry bedding or soft towels and change them frequently.

Thanks for reaching out about Basil. If there is swelling around the genitals and he is already neutered, a veterinary visit is highly recommended as soon as possible. If he was castrated recently, there is a concern over an abscess or seroma in the scrotum or a hernia. A hernia could be a medical emergency, if intestinal tract has herniated. Monitor appetite, defecation and urination. Good luck.

I would advise that you go ahead and give a dose of the Benedryl and then get him into the vet as soon as possible- tonight with the ER vet is ideal. This could signal an allergic reaction, or a viral/bacterial infection. But I am most worried about something extremely painful such as a testicular torsion (where the testicle twists on itself, cutting of blood flow and causing swelling). If you can’t get to the vet tonight, ice the testicle for 5-10 minutes every 2-64hours to help with pain and swelling. Place a paper towel or thin cloth between the ice pack and his scrotum. Thank you for using Pet Coach, and for posting the picture. From the picture it appears that the scrotal incision may have opened up and their may be a large blood clot there. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to make sure that there is no infection and to See if the incision needs to be revised or not. This could be caused by a local inflammation and possibly an infection. Persistent licking and rubbing can worsen the inflammation. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly anti-inflammatory ointment are needed to solve the problem. At home, some zinc oxide ointment/cream (like sudocream) can be apply twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any).
