My rabbit has black, hard testicles. What's wrong and what to do?

Hello doctor, From last two three days my rabbit's testicle is getting black and hard. One side is totally harden but the other side is affected half. But he is behaving totally normal. I don't have any good vet for my rabbit near my home town. Can you please suggest any treatment or medication or any care tips. He is about 3 yrs old. Thank you

There is a problem with both testicles. The hard and black areas are areas of necrosis (tissue death). This is very serious. Likely due to an infection of some sort. It is very hard for us to recommend treatment for someone to use in a country we are unfamiliar with. I have no idea what products you have available to use. I checked Amazon and it looks like you can get Betadine Ointment 5%. I suggest you apply a thin layer of this ointment twice a day. If it starts to look worse at any time or it does not resolve he needs to see a vet. Be sure his cage is clean and dry at all times. Sitting in urine can cause this type of infection.

Thanks for reaching out. Could this be a bite wound from the other hamster? The dark skin is probably necrotic (dead) dermis. It could be an abscess. Infections should be treated with systemic antibiotics and possible anti-inflammatories/analgesia, as it could be painful. A veterinary visit is recommended, as only a veterinarian can prescribe antibiotics. Good luck.

My rabbit has a swollen testicle, weak leg, and is lethargic. What's wrong?

Thanks for reaching out about Snowbell. This is probably not a simple condition so a veterinary visit needs to be scheduled, even if not experts in rabbits. A swollen testicle can be an infection, tumor or other, but due to the nature of rabbit pus, just antibiotics rarely sure this. Recommendation is probably castration. As for the leg, radiographs are probably needed to determine what is going on, fracture/dislocation/spinal problems. Each has different treatments. Good luck.

My rabbit has eye discharge and black spots on his penis. Is this normal?

Hi and thank you for your question. With regards to the dark areas near his penis, theses are normal fatty secretions. You can clean them gently if you like. They are of no concern. As to the eye, this could be due to an upper respiratory infection and/or blockage of his tear duct. If it persists please take him to the vet as it will require treatment. Regards

Black scrotum/testicles is not a good sign especially if wounds are present. The black color often means that the skin is dying. I suggest you have Tommy looked at by your vet. Why is my dog's testicle skin black, crusty, peeling, and red?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Messiah! It looks as though he either has a scrotal infection or is having a contact reaction or suffered a burn or trauma to the scrotum. If he is licking them excessively he needs to wear an E-collar. I would use a triple antibiotic ointment on the scrotum twice daily. If there is no improvement over the weekend have him seen by your Vet next week. Good luck

My rabbit's testicles seem huge. Is this normal for a male rabbit?

Thank you for your question about Luna, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. Luna's testicles are of a normal size for a rabbit. This species has very prominent testicles, and the sparse fur that is present on the surface of the scrotum often makes them look even larger. I cannot appreciate any abnormalities on the surfaces of either testicle with the photos that you have attached either.
