Is spaying risky for my small rabbit? What are the risks for smaller breeds?

Spaying female rabbit involve giving general anaesthesia (either by injections or by inhaling anaesthetic gas) and performing surgery to remove the ovaries and the uterus. The abdomen is clipped once the bunny is asleep, then a small incision on the abdominal wall is made and finally the ovaries / uterus are removed. There are usually 3-4 stitches inside the abdomen and some stitches to close up the abdomen and the skin. Most of the rabbits are back to normal very quickly after the surgery (within 1-2 days), so hopefully Oreo will also recover rapidly. You will need to make sure she is kept warm at home, she eating as normal and passing normal stools. She will likely be prescribed a few days or pain killers to go home with.

I am sorry you are having trouble with Lily. I would recommend getting her spayed with a vet who has experience. I have spayed a lot of rabbits and never had a problem however they do have a higher risk of anesthesia due to being rabbits. I also would try to work on training with Lily, This will help stimulate her and exercise her which will hopefully decrease her wanting to destroy things in the house. I hope that helps

It's true that wild rabbits don't have surgery to be spayed, but they also have many more health problems and shorter lifespans than pet rabbits :) The cost to spay a rabbit will vary depending on what part of the country you live in and which specific clinic you use, so I would recommend calling around to some local vets who do this surgery to ask about costs.

Hi! It is possible that after Mistie is spayed she will accept the other rabbit. However, just like people, some rabbit personalities just don’t ever get along. So I’d have your rabbits spayed and neutered and do a gradual introduction in neutral areas as you suggested. But realize the pairing might not take and be ready to intervene and separate them if necessary. When rabbits don’t get along, they can be quite aggressive and harm one another. Also, keep in mind that even after a male rabbit is neutered, he can store sperm for up to 28 days! Of course, this won’t be an issue if you have Mistie spayed.

Spaying is always a good idea as it will prevent accidental or unwanted litters. A spayed doe may also live a longer and healthier life. If Midnight is almost 10 years old though, age may be a factor in determining if she is a candidate for anesthesia. It maybe a bit awkward for her to lay down at first, especially if she has a cone. I recommend monitoring her incision site closely for any redness, swelling, or discharge as these can be signs of an infection. Unfortunately, rabbits have notoriously small veins, so it is difficult to place an IV catheter, but Bubba’s ear and paw should heal quickly. The hair regrowth may be patchy, so do not be alarmed.
