My spayed bunny can't get up after flopping. Is her IV site sore?

Spaying female rabbit involve giving general anaesthesia (either by injections or by inhaling anaesthetic gas) and performing surgery to remove the ovaries and the uterus. The abdomen is clipped once the bunny is asleep, then a small incision on the abdominal wall is made and finally the ovaries / uterus are removed. There are usually 3-4 stitches inside the abdomen and some stitches to close up the abdomen and the skin. Most of the rabbits are back to normal very quickly after the surgery (within 1-2 days), so hopefully Oreo will also recover rapidly. You will need to make sure she is kept warm at home, she eating as normal and passing normal stools. She will likely be prescribed a few days or pain killers to go home with.

Since Blossom is still eating and producing normal stool I would not worry just yet. She is probably very uncomfortable from her surgery. Continue to monitor her closely and if she stops eating then take her to your vet for a recheck.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It looks like the incision has opened up slightly at the bottom. This does require a re-assessment by a veterinarian, but if she is otherwise eating and acting normally, then I think you can wait until your regular vet opens tomorrow. In the meantime, keep the cone on, and keep her bedding as clean as possible to avoid getting the incision dirty. No need to clean the incision yourself until she gets assessed at the vets. If she is more lethargic or has a decreased appetite or stool production, then I would recommend taking her to the vet today if possible, as this may be a sign of pain from the surgery or a more serious infection. You just need to monitor them closely, check the suture area once a day and make sure they are eating properly after the procedure. it is also recommended to avoid conventional bedding for the first few days, i usually recommend paper shreds instead.

I would not recommend bathing any animal within 14 days after any surgery. If you see a little blood and can dab it with a clean damp cloth that is ok. If there is excessive bleeding, discharge, bruising, swelling, or if Fezzik is licking or biting at the site you should contact your veterinarian who may elect to treat with antibiotics, pain medications, or help you come up with a plan to prevent him from bothering the surgical site. It is not uncommon, however for there to be a small amount of redness and inflammation, even a few drops of blood at a surgical site for a few days after surgery. Good luck with Fezzick!

Spaying is a major abdominal surgery, and it's not surprising that Harley isn't very active. It's good that she is eating and defecating, so just keep an eye on her for now. If she isn't more active tomorrow, give her vet a call.
