Is it safe to spay my 3-year-old rabbit to avoid health risks?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 6 months old

Should I spay my rabbit? She is three years old and I am worried that there will be health risks if I do it now. I would’ve loved to spay her when she was younger, but we could not afford it, and she was belonging to my older brother at this time. it wasn’t really my choice if she got spayed or not. She is my only rabbit and I would love to get her a friend, but she needs to be spayed to do so. also the main reason I want her spayed is to prevert cancers in an older age

The fact that Alice is an adult rabbit now does not increase the risks when you have her spayed, It is a good idea to have her spayed due to the uterine cancer risk and also avoiding spraying, which females sometimes do. So you can have her spayed now, preferably at a veterinary office that treats a lot of bunnies.

Hi, I would not say that it is really late, it is still early enough to prevent cancer and other disorders of the reproductive tract. I would sincerely recommend you decide to have it done. My only piece of advice is finding someone who is really happy and confident about neutering rabbits as they are delicate and can have fragile tissue, they can suffer with post op pain and gut stasis. I would look for the best vet with exotic pets in town ! Hope this helps !

There will probably not be any sign during this time frame, if she gets in heat she may start being a little territorial and aggressive. i would personally recommend to wait until she is 6 months to have her spayed, i believe it is safer.

Is spaying safe for my rabbit? Will it stop her destructive behavior?

I am sorry you are having trouble with Lily. I would recommend getting her spayed with a vet who has experience. I have spayed a lot of rabbits and never had a problem however they do have a higher risk of anesthesia due to being rabbits. I also would try to work on training with Lily, This will help stimulate her and exercise her which will hopefully decrease her wanting to destroy things in the house. I hope that helps

Will spaying my 8-month-old rabbit calm her hormones and territory?

There is no way to know if spaying will help to change her behvavior or not. There is no guarantee but it probably will help somewhat. Rabbits are very territorial so once that behavior is ingrained in them it is hard to correct it even with surgery. When they are spayed younger, the surgery has a better chance of working to change unwanted behaviors. It is recommended to spay around 4-6 months. Worried about bunny spay? What happens & how to care?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Spaying female rabbit involve giving general anaesthesia (either by injections or by inhaling anaesthetic gas) and performing surgery to remove the ovaries and the uterus. The abdomen is clipped once the bunny is asleep, then a small incision on the abdominal wall is made and finally the ovaries / uterus are removed. There are usually 3-4 stitches inside the abdomen and some stitches to close up the abdomen and the skin. Most of the rabbits are back to normal very quickly after the surgery (within 1-2 days), so hopefully Oreo will also recover rapidly. You will need to make sure she is kept warm at home, she eating as normal and passing normal stools. She will likely be prescribed a few days or pain killers to go home with.
