My rabbit has white milky eye discharge. Is it an infection or teeth?

Hi, I have a rabbit and he has white milky discharge coming out of his eye.I am scared that he has an infection or some sort like that.His whole eye is starting to become white from the mucus or discharge.I am scared he might leave me and die.Please reply soon as possible.

IT looks like Hero might have an eye infection but most likely has an issue with his teeth. Rabbits are very prone to dental disease and overgrowth of their molars. When the molars over grow it puts pressure of the tear duct and white discharge will form. It is best for hero to see a vet for a good exam of the mouth and eye to determine the cause and start providing proper treatment! hope that helps and thanks for using pet coach

I would need to see a photograph to better assess the problem. However, you seem to be describing some sort of thick discharge coming from Fluffy's eye. There are many reasons that this can occur and most of them are going to require veterinary intervention. Tooth root abscesses are known to cause eye discharge. Primary ophthalmic diseases of the eye will do this. More common than those are traumatic injuries to the eye that ultimately cause the discharge. All of the above require a doctor to treat before matters get worse. Hope this makes sense. If I have misunderstood the symptoms and you'd like to speak further, please obtain a consultation. He has an eye infection for sure, it's usually coming together with an upper respiratory infection as well. very often the tear duct will get blocked as a result and this may cause many future problems to the eye. you need to take him to the vet ASAP in order to get it treated, he will need antibiotic eyedrops and oral antibiotics as well.

He seems to be suffering from an eye infection, often it is combined with tear duct blockage in rabbits, i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP in order to get it checked and treated, he will need antibiotic eye drops and possibly will also need to have his tear ducts deblocked.

This could be an infection, dental disease (affecting drainage), stress and other problems. Continue to wipe the eye area with a moistened clear wash cloth. Why does my rabbit have sticky eye discharge and red eyelids?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Gunky discharge from the eye may be a sign of an eye infection. I would recommend having Honey assessed by a vet within the next 24 hours, as eye problems can worsen quickly if untreated. In the meantime, if you are comfortable with it you can try gently flushing the eye out with a sterile saline solution in case there is any foreign material such as dirt or hay stuck under the eyelid, causing the eye infection. If you notice the eye is getting worse or if she is scratching at it, I would recommend getting her seen by the vet as soon as possible! I hope this helps, and that Honey is feeling better soon!

My rabbit has chronic weepy eyes. How can I stop them from returning?

Miffy may have blocked tear ducts He could also have chronic conjunctivitis that requires a different eye drops with antibiotic. Please, take Miffy to your local vet and discuss flushing the tear ducts (this is fairly easy to do but many rabbits need mild sedation for this procedure) or start him on different eye drops. Your vet may want to send off a swab from the eyes to external laboratory to find out what type of antibiotic would be best to use.

Blocked tear ducts in rabbits are usually due to a problem with the teeth, either an infected tooth root or a tooth not growing properly. Other causes include infections in the eye or in the region of the tear duct, as well as obesity or inflammation as contributing factors. If your rabbit has seeping eyes, especially if it is just one eye, then getting some x-rays done of your bunny's head to see if a tooth needs to be removed is a good idea. Best of luck with Dylan!

How do I identify and treat my bunny's eye infection? Vet or home?

I will do my best to give you the clearest and most current information I can. Cute bunny, and congratulations on your new family member. Yes, it is pretty common for bunnies to get eye infections but there are a number of different reasons for them. The most common of those include a blocked tear duct that would normal drain extra tears from the eye into the nose, an abrasion or scratch, or an E. Cuniculi infection. A blocked tear duct can be caused by something as simple as a dusty brand of hay to something as complex as a chronic tooth issue. In a bunny as young as yours the chronic condition is less likely. Unfortunately, the only good way to tell if there is a blockage is for a vet to stain the eye and see if the colored stain drains into the nose as it should. If it is blocked, the vet can flush it out. They could also get a very superficial look at the teeth to see if they appear normal. The vet would be likely to give you some medication to help the irritated skin in front of the eye heal faster as well, for now please keep that area as clean and dry as possible.

That appears to be urine. The feces next to it appears normal. Rabbit urine can be cloudy and may range in color from white to red. If she is behaving normally otherwise, monitor for lethargy or loss of appetite. Since she is "new" to you, consider an exam with your veterinarian to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions.
