My new rabbit has milky yellow discharge. Is it pee or diarrhea?

Hello there! Rabbit urine can be a rainbow of colors and still be normal. Rabbits excrete a large amount of minerals in their urine, like calcium, which can be whitish in color. Their urine also changes color based on what they eat - for example, a rabbit that eats a lot of carrot or sweet potato in a day will have dark orange colored urine. Milky white urine is probably nothing to worry about, but if Blacky is exhibiting any other symptoms (like anorexia or diarrhea), or you see any mucous-like substances or red streaking (potentially blood) in the urine, be sure to visit your vet right away. It is very normal for rabbits to have "milky urine" as they excrete a significant amount of calcium in their urine. It is also not unusual for their urine to be red-tinged, as a result of the porphyrins and plant pigments they excrete in their urine. I hope this is helpful!

The photo is blurry but that looks like diarrhea/soft stool stuck on her fur. I suggest you take Cocaine to your vet for an exam. She likely needs treatment for this. It looks pretty significant. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Rabbit pee is often thick and deep yellow, however it should flow freely. If not, then your rabbit may have bladder sludge (usually comprised of calcium salts, it appears sandy or gritty). I the urine is sludgy you will need to take Luna to a vet. Make sure Luna has plenty of fresh water available at all times. Make sure she has plenty of exercise. The pellets appear normal. Rabbits have 2 types of stool. The ones pictured and cecotropes, or night stool which they ingest to absorb additional nutrients. The white substance is likely dried calcium from the urine. Rabbits excrete excess calcium in the urine, frequently giving it a white or cloudy appearance. This is normal and no cause for concern.

Normal rabbit urine often reflects their diet and comes in many colors of red-orange-yellow and is not of major concern unless there are obvious blood clots, discomfort when urinating or altered thirst/fever.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Bunny urine usually oxidizes the longer it is exposed to air, so it is normal for it to turn a shade of orange-pink as in the photo. However, if you notice she is urinating in unusual spots, or if she is acting off or eating or pooping less, then I would recommend seeking veterinary attention. It may be related to a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or crystals. In the meantime, ensure that Rose drinks plenty of water which will keep her urinating and flushing out any infection or crystals out of her bladder. You can do this by providing her usual green leafy veggies soaked in water for a few minutes before giving them to her. I hope this helps, and that Rose is well!
