Why is my rabbit limping on his front paw? What can I do to help?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 4.4 lbs

Hi, my pet rabbit has been limping and I'm not sure why or what to do. It appears to be his front paw. We cut his nails today in case that was the problem, but he's still limping. What do I need to do to help him? And what could it be?

The most common reason for a young rabbit to be limping would be generalized musculoskeletal pain from something traumatic. Certainly as you said nail length can contribute or a wound on the affected limb. However, if you have eliminated these as possibilities, I would say that the next logical assumption is there is a bony or soft tissue injury affecting your bunny. She would probably benefit from a physical exam to see if an area can be isolated, and possibly if warranted, some x-rays could be obtained. Anti-inflammatory and pain medications are also available for rabbits and might provide some significant relief. In the mean time until you can get him in, I would just try to limit his mobility and confine him to a smaller area. Hope this is helpful.

    That could be due to a trauma (involving either the soft or bony tissues). If he is using the leg the injury should not be that severe, but some pain killers and anti-inflammatory would be ideally needed to speed up recovery.
    If the signs do not resolve in 24 hours I would recommend a check up.

    Poor Chester! There are great prescription pain medications appropriate for rabbits like Metacam that you can get from your vet. He needs X-rays of the paw as it might be dislocated, and if so this must be fixed under sedation. Then you will know how severe the injury is and get appropriate pain meds. Hope that helps!

    Poor Nibbles! It sounds like he's injured his leg or paw. If you can't find any injury, and he is still limping tomorrow, he needs to see your exotics veterinarian. I recommend xrays of the leg to make sure it's not broken. Rabbits are very stoic creatures and since they are prey animals, they can be in excruciating pain and usually don't demonstrate this. You may need to ask for pain medication for him even if you don't find anything wrong on xrays. I use Metacam/meloxicam all the time in rabbits, so this is very reasonable to ask for.     If it just started you can let him rest for a few days with minimal walking and minimal physical exercise, if it does not improve within 3-4 days you will have to take him to the vet in order to get it checked and treated, he might need pain killers for a few days. if the vet think it's something more serious such as a fracture, joint injury or foreign body, he might recommend to have an xray done as well.

I am sorry to hear about Bun Buns! Rabbits unfortunately are prone to developing back injuries which can cause weakness or paralysis in the hind legs due to neurological damage. I would recommend confining Bun Buns and getting him to the vet as soon as possible for evaluation. The vet will do a physical examination, test reflexes, and may recommend an x-ray to help determine what is causing his symptoms and how best to treat Bun Buns.

Limping in rabbits are not very common unless they suffered a severe trauma that either caused a fracture or a joint displacement, Sebs will need to have an X-ray done at the vets in order to evaluate the condition, if i had to guess it is probably a serious injury that will require surgery.

This could be an infection or a foreign body that penetrated the paw (a piece of hard hay for example), i would recommend taking Bun bun to the vet in order to get it checked, if the vet thinks it is a foreign body, a minor surgical procedure will be needed to take it out.

It does sound as if Donut’s foot may be bothering her. She may have a torn or injured toenail or could have gotten her paw stuck in the sides of her cage. I would recommend examining her foot and seeing if you can see anything abnormal. If you can’t and she is still acting painful for more than a day or so then I would recommend having her checked out by your veterinarian. My rabbit's nail came off and he's biting the wound. What do I do?
Ouch, poor Thumper! His nail may have caught on something and gotten torn. This is very painful, and the remaining quick and nail bed can be susceptible to infection. Thumper may be chewing at his foot for either reason. I recommend having him seen by a vet, to make sure his foot otherwise seems ok, ensure there is no infection developing, and get him put on appropriate pain medication. You can have his nails trimmed at that time as well - nails often get torn if they are getting too long, so your vet can help trim those down if you haven't been trimming them yourself.
