My rabbit is holding her back foot up. Should I take her to the vet?

My rabbit seems to have hurt her back foot. She is holding it up and not putting pressure on it. She is eating and hopping around on three legs and still able to jump in and out of her litter box. The only thing is she hates being picked up and I want to check her foot but I’m afraid she will make it worse if I try because she squirms and try’s to escape out of my hands. :(

If she is holding the foot in the air and not using it, it's probably a serious injury, either a fracture or a dislocation. you need to take her to the vet ASAP, they will need to check her and will probably recommend doing an xray to evaluate the severity of the injury.

    It sounds like she is suffering from either a fractured leg or spine injury, either way this is very urgent and you must take her to the emergencies right away to have an xray done and get it treated.

Thanks for reaching out about Poppy and including photos.. Yes, you should see a veterinarian as dislocations or fractures, will unlikely heal well on their own, and are definitely painful. The caging is inappropriate, as it is a bird cage. The bars are too far apart and limbs/feet can get caught. Good luck.

This could be arthritis, a soft tissue injury (like a sprain), an infection, or even a broken bone. You could try to let her rest for a few days to see if it improves. This could be an infection or a foreign body that penetrated the paw (a piece of hard hay for example), i would recommend taking Bun bun to the vet in order to get it checked, if the vet thinks it is a foreign body, a minor surgical procedure will be needed to take it out.
