Are mosquitoes dangerous for my outdoor rabbit? What diseases?

Heart worm disease is transmitted by mosquitos. This is by far the biggest concern for diseases spread by mosquitos that we see in dogs. Dogs are quite resistant to developing disease from west nile virus, so while they can technically become infected, they don't get sick. Dogs do not get malaria from mosquitos. There is another form of malaria that affects dogs that is spread by ticks. Ticks can also transmit a number of other diseases to dogs, including lyme disease, and many other diseases. The best flea / mite treatment and preventative in my opinion for rabbits Revolution, which is a prescription product marketed for cats and dogs. Typically, in a small Lionhead rabbit, you should use the smallest size of Revolution available, which is designed for kittens under 5 lbs. Hope this helps.

Hello. Rabbits can be vaccinated against rabies, especially if they are to be kept outdoors & there is a threat of contact with wild animals. We use a vaccine called IMRAB for rabbits at risk, or are in petting zoos. Rabbits are very prone to developing injection site swellings & abscesses, so this is a potential problem with vaccinations in rabbits. Hi, it is best to keep rabbits inside at night in very hot or very cold weather. They can go outside in nice weather and back inside at night. Predators love rabbits, since they have no way to fight back if another animal wants to eat them. Also, outside they are prone to get fleas, ticks, and other external parasites on their bodies. They can also get internal parasites from eating brush and dirt. If you live where dogs and cats go, I would only allow your rabbit outside in a very secure cage. Make sure it is large enough for the rabbit to get exercise, has shelter, and food and water available. It also should go underground a half a foot so predators cannot dig under the fencing. So in light of the set up it takes to safely keep a rabbit outside, it is better to keep them indoor where they are safe. Rabbits can be leash walked with a small harness for outdoor activity. A wolf worm is the larva from a fly. The fly will lay an egg in a wound on another animal (like a rabbit or cat) and once the egg hatches you have the wolf worm. It is very important to make sure the environment your bunny is in is clean, free from excess feces and urine and leftover food and anything else that may attract flies. It is also important to check your rabbit daily for any wounds and have them treated right away if you notice them to prevent any further infestation.

Hello. Parasites are any organisms that live on the body & can cause irritation, infection, or other disease. Fleas, ticks, mites & lice live on the outside of the body. Parasitic worms, coccidia, giardia & others are parasites that can cause diarrhea, weight loss, bleeding & other problems inside the body, primarily in the intestines. Treatment depends on what you have. The easiest way to approach this is to take Bun Bun to your vet for a thorough exam of the outside for skin parasites, & then a stool check to see what parasites may be present in the intestines.
