I just got a dwarf hamster. How can I identify its specific type?

Hi, I assume you're asking if we think Pippy and Piper are indeed Syrian variety of Hamster- yes they are!! I had a hamster just like the darker colored one and he lived for 2 years which is the normal lifespan. They are cute and I'm glad they get along well!

Do not use an aquarium tank. A suitably sized (and secure) wire cage with a solid bottom is recommended. HabiTrail and Kaytee have excellent choices for cages. Buy the largest cage you can afford and fit in the chosen space. You can use recycled paper bedding such as CareFresh or Yesterday's News. Aspen shavings or pellets are also acceptable. Do not use pine or cedar shavings as these can be irritating. A commercial diet from Kaytee or VitaKraft can be fed from a ceramic bowl. A ceramic bowl prevents gnawing and tipping. A non chewable water bottle can be hung to provide fresh water daily. Other necessary items include chew toys and an exercise wheel. Find a veterinarian experienced in treating pocket pets and have your new addition examined to confirm good health. Feed, water and exercise daily. Clean the cage weekly. These little guys require very little care and can provide lots of entertainment. Congrats and enjoy!

It depends on where you go but in general anywhere between $10-20 per hamster. You must then add in the cost for a cage, toys (they love wheels), water bottle, food and a dust free litter. Sometimes you can find kits that will include all these items. Once again prices vary widely based on the size of the cage. Hope this helps!

Hello. I would guess that Smidge is indeed pregnant. Hamsters reach breeding age at 6-10 weeks & are pregnant an average of 13-22 days. Since she is new to you & her environment, it is important to not disturb her too much once she has her brood. The Syrian, or Teddy Bear, hamster would be the best choice for first pet. Allow the hamster to settle in for a few days then gradually acclimate him/her to being pet or handled. Always use praise and rewards after each session.

There are certain hamsters that will tolerate one another, but in general, they are solitary. The safest option would be to have two cages for the hamsters. This would be especially important in case there is a male and a female or two males. I hope that this gives you a place to start!
