Why are my Petco Syrian hamsters small and friendly? Are they Syrians?

I have two syrian hamsters and they have always been housed together (I know they are solitary animals). They have never fought and are great companions. I got them from petco a year ago and have yet to see any other hamsters like them. Syrian hamsters are supposed to be larger than they are and be extreamly violent twards each other, while mine are a smaller size (Not the size of a dwarf hamster) and as sweet as can be. I'm not sure what their species of hamster is? I don't trust Petco.

Hi, I assume you're asking if we think Pippy and Piper are indeed Syrian variety of Hamster- yes they are!! I had a hamster just like the darker colored one and he lived for 2 years which is the normal lifespan. They are cute and I'm glad they get along well!

Hello. I would guess that Smidge is indeed pregnant. Hamsters reach breeding age at 6-10 weeks & are pregnant an average of 13-22 days. Since she is new to you & her environment, it is important to not disturb her too much once she has her brood. The Syrian, or Teddy Bear, hamster would be the best choice for first pet. Allow the hamster to settle in for a few days then gradually acclimate him/her to being pet or handled. Always use praise and rewards after each session.

Why are my hamster's babies different colors in the same litter?

Depending on the genes of the two hamsters who mated, a variety of different hamster colors can be created - even if it doesn't seem to match either of the parents. This is because of dominant and recessive genes/alleles that compete for expression in the genome. I just got a dwarf hamster. How can I identify its specific type?

I think you have a Dwarf Campbell's Hamster. Its a variant of a Russian Dwarf hamster. These guys tend to be more curious and outgoing then other hamsters. Congratulations on adding Gus to your family! I know you will have lots of fun with him!
