Should I get a second dwarf hamster? Will it need a separate cage?

There is a good chance that 2 adult male hamsters will fight and induce significant injuries. If you would like to try to introduce them to each other regardless, I would start with a completely clean cage with fresh bedding and keep them on either side of a mesh divider so that they can see and smell each other without being able to fight. I do not recommend putting one into the other’s cage as the original hamster will likely become extremely territorial. For 2 weeks or so, you can remove the mesh divider for short periods of time while you are carefully monitoring them and offering plenty of enrichment in the form of shelters, toys, food treats to keep them occupied. If you notice any aggression, I would give up and keep them separate from then on. If after several supervised periods alone (about 30 min each time) over 2 week you do not notice any signs of aggression, you may remove the mesh divider but examine them carefully each day for scabs/wounds especially on the rumps, genital area, hind legs. It depends on the hamesters. Not all hamsters will get along. It is also important that you do not put male and female together unless you want babies or one is spayed/neutered. If you are going to try you need to monitor them closely and I would not leave them together over night. If they are doing well you can leave them together for longer periods of time. Some hamsters will have aggression when put together. Hope that helps

IT's a very common mistake to take two hamsters and put them in the same cage, regardless of their gender, they will almost certainly fight and you will either have to eventually separate them to two different cages or you will end up with a dead hamster. i strongly recommend NOT putting two hamsters in the same cage.

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately if the hamsters were not raised together, it is not likely that they will get along and very possible they will fight and injure eachother. If your hamsters initially did not get along I probably would not try to put them back together again. Also, if you cage an male and female together they will mate and you may have many liters of babies to take care of. You may be able to get them together on ‘neutral ground’, somewhere outside of either of their cages so they won’t feel territorial of the space. I hope this helps. It's most definitely due to fighting, they are known to be fighting when kept together, for this reason it is recommended to have only one hamster per cage. unfortunately many pet shops tend to give false information about this, they don't warn you about this issue but this the unfortunate truth. i recommend separating them into 2 different cages.

Do not use an aquarium tank. A suitably sized (and secure) wire cage with a solid bottom is recommended. HabiTrail and Kaytee have excellent choices for cages. Buy the largest cage you can afford and fit in the chosen space. You can use recycled paper bedding such as CareFresh or Yesterday's News. Aspen shavings or pellets are also acceptable. Do not use pine or cedar shavings as these can be irritating. A commercial diet from Kaytee or VitaKraft can be fed from a ceramic bowl. A ceramic bowl prevents gnawing and tipping. A non chewable water bottle can be hung to provide fresh water daily. Other necessary items include chew toys and an exercise wheel. Find a veterinarian experienced in treating pocket pets and have your new addition examined to confirm good health. Feed, water and exercise daily. Clean the cage weekly. These little guys require very little care and can provide lots of entertainment. Congrats and enjoy!
