Which hamster is easiest to tame and handle for a child's first pet?

Updated on August 13th, 2026

I am getting a 10 year old a hamster for xmas, but which breed is the best suited? She would love to handle them sometimes, and am wanting to get her a Russian dwarf but know that Syrians are a lot easier to tame.

The Syrian, or Teddy Bear, hamster would be the best choice for first pet. Allow the hamster to settle in for a few days then gradually acclimate him/her to being pet or handled. Always use praise and rewards after each session.
