My hedgehog has green, runny, mucousy poop. What could be wrong?

Green stool can happen in hedgehogs. It can be caused by a variety of reasons, including stress, illness, or diet change. If he otherwise seems normal than you can monitor him and see if the color goes back to normal, especially if you have introduced a new food. If you have any concern that your hedgehog is sick, take him to a veterinarian. It is fine to add water to his food but you should still offer him fresh water in a water bottle at all times.

Green feces in a hedgehog is usually an indication of simple gastrointestinal upset. There are a variety of causes for GI upset in these guys, usually arising from dietary indiscretion. They can also be the victim of some GI parasites. I would recommend having the feces looked at microscopically to rule out a parasites. If there is no diarrhea and Tep's appetite is OK however, I don't see a need to advise for veterinary intervention at this time. If there is a decreased appetite and evidence of loose stool, finding someone to examine your hedgehog might be useful. Hope this makes sense.

If you can have little Henry seen by a veterinarian, this would be best, because it sounds like he may be suffering from internal & external parasites. A stool sample would show if Henry has a parasite called coccidia, or other parasites such as lungworms, tapeworms , or other species of nematodes. The rubbing could result from the presence of the common mange mite of hedgehogs, although they can also harbor other mite species, fleas & ticks. Keeping his environment very clean ( every 2 days ) will prevent reinfestation once he receives treatment. Hope all is well soon with Henry.

In general, green poop in ferrets means that food is passing through their gut too quickly, and the fact that she had some runny green poop confirms that this is likely the case. Diarrhea in ferrets can be caused by multiple conditions, including parasites (worms or protozoan parasites), dietary indiscretions (eating things she's not used to or not supposed to), and lymphoma (which is unlikely in a young gal like Luna). I recommend that if the green and/or runny poo continues, you should bring Luna to the vet for an exam. They will probably check her stool for parasites, and they may want an x-ray to rule out any masses in her belly. Other ferret-specific diseases like Aleutian disease, insulinoma, and estrogen toxicity are also a concern, but less likely if she isn't exhibiting other symptoms. Metabolic problems such as liver or kidney disease, bladder stones, urinary tract infections, bacterial or parasitic enteritis, dental disease, just to name a few. A veterinary visit and examination could really help you with diagnostic and treatment plans. Maintaining hydration and nutrition are very important, as you are already working on. Good luck.

Hi there! While diarrhea in new gerbils is not entirely unusual (as stress and food changes can cause soft stool), I am concerned about the combination of continued diarrhea and the green coloration. Unless you have been feeding Peach a large amount of green-colored food, green coloration usually indicates a large amount of bile released in the intestines, and this can indicate a disease process. A common diarrheal disease of Gerbils is called Tyzzer's disease, and it can cause fatal dehydration if not treated. I'm glad to hear that Peach is still eating, drinking, and acting normal, but if the diarrhea continues or if his attitude changes, I strongly suggest taking him to the vet as he may require antibiotic treatment and fluid replacement therapy. This condition may also be contagious, so keep a close eye on the other gerbils for similar symptoms. Hopefully, the diarrhea will abate on its own, but if it doesn't after a day or so, please consider contacting a veterinarian. Best of luck to you and your new friend, Peach!

Thanks for reaching out about Hubert and including photos. The lump on the skin could be a cyst, abscess or tumor. Not sure if this is part of the anorexia problems or a second problem, but a veterinary visit is recommended. Try wetting the food and offer through a syringe. Try and maintain hydration also, until a veterinary visit is scheduled. Good luck.
