My hamster has a tusk-like tooth. What should I do? Vet cost?

I would definitely have a vet take a look to figure out why this is happening, and if they believe the tooth is just going to come out on its own. If he is in enough pain in and around the mouth / teeth, he may eventually stop eating and drinking. Unlike dogs and cats who can do this for a couple days, anorexia in rodents for even a period of 12-24 hours is very, very bad. The cost of the visit will largely depend on what the vet finds, diagnostics that may be required, treatments, and if needed, medications to go home. Geographic region will also play a major role in price of veterinary care. Can't say I know much about cost in Hawaii, but since everything else is always more expensive there, vet care may follow that pattern. Hope this makes sense.

Your vet should be able to trim Cookie's teeth. Some hamsters need this done routinely (every 2-3 months) but you may be able to prevent it from happening again by giving him plenty of things to chew on. Hamsters incisors grow continuously which is why they need to be worn down or trimmed regularly. Your vet may also recommend starting so antibiotics since there is an open wound. Best of luck.

Your hamster is suffering from abnormal dentition, the lower incisors teeth are much too long compared to the upper ones. you need to get her to the vet to have the lower front incisors cut, the upper one that fell will regrow very soon.

Hello. It is possible to try & reposition the cheek pouch under anesthesia, but unless the conditions that caused it are addressed, it may happen again. Normally, we just recommend amputating the pouch & sewing the edges closed. Cost, unfortunately, is based on who is willing to do the surgery, & general costs in your area. Just start calling around the vets in your area to find who is best to help little Buttercup. But I would not leave it alone as it will become traumatized, eventually necrotic, & this is a sad way to die. Hope you can help her soon. Take care.

It is a little difficult to judge based on this picture but if you can see the teeth when the mouth is closed then yes, he will need to have them trimmed. All hamster’s have continuously growing incisors that need to be worn down frequently. If the bite is off then the teeth will no wear properly and they will need to be trimmed. I would recommend having the teeth trimmed by your veterinarian because it can be a little tricky.

I am so sorry to hear about Bambi! That sounds so painful! I would continue to call around to local vets and ask if anyone can see her. Explain that you are desperate for help and she is in pain. Perhaps someone will be willing to take a chance or knows a vet who sees exotic animals. The tooth needs to be removed and likely antibiotics given, and she may need regular tooth trimmings. It is a risk if she needs anesthesia to remove the tooth, but unfortunately it sounds like she is in pain and cannot eat well so she is suffering and this either needs to be treated or she needs to be humanely euthanized.

It does depend on where you live but on average I would say an exam is about $30-70, but could be higher for an exotic specialist. If you are on a budget, it is worth calling around your area - and I would also ask if they are comfortable treating hamsters as not all vets are! I hope this helps!
