My hamster has red bugs. Are they mites? How do I get rid of them?

Yes, they are likely to be mites, even though to confirm this clinical suspicion at least a picture would be needed. I would strongly recommend to have an effective treatment on prescription given by your local veterinary clinic as a lot of over the counter treatments do not actually work.

It could possibly be mange (mites in the hair follicles), ringworm (a fungal infection), or a bacterial skin infection. As ringworm is contagious to people and can spread rapidly, I recommend bringing your hamster to a vet for an examination and diagnostics based on the appearance of the lesions. In the meantime I would recommend handling your hamster with gloves and bathing with an antibacterial/antifungal shampoo such as Malaseb shampoo if you have access to this without a prescription where you live.

Your hamster may be suffering from ectoparasites such as mites or fleas and/or an allergy to the bites. I suggest you take him to a veterinarian for a hands-on exam and diagnosis. The vet can prescribe or treat your hamster with a proper medicine to kill the parasites. There are mite treatments for hamsters available in the pet shops, but I am not sure whether they are effective. You will definitely need to clean and disinfect your hamster's cage, bedding and toys and food and water containers to hopefully prevent the mites from reinfecting your hamster after treatment.

Your hamster has a parasitic infection and you need to take him to a vet to get a treatment to kill the parasites. They may be mites, and I have used products for cats like Revolution to treat them in small mammals, but you'll likely have to get this from your veterinarian and dose it appropriately.

Most of these conditions are very itchy, and some hamsters may actually scratch so much that they draw blood. This can lead to further infection as the skin barrier is compromised. I recommend having Bear looked at by a vet as soon as possible to determine the cause of his skin condition and begin the appropriate treatment. These mites are not visible with the naked eye and require a microscopic examination of an ear scrape. At the veterinary visit, a treatment plan can be implemented. It is agreed, it one hamster has mites, they all have mites but maybe not visible yet. Good luck.
