Help! My hamster has rashes and bugs in his cage. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | 1 year and 10 months old

So i have a syrian hamster, turning 2 next month. in 23 nov 2018 i let a friend take care of him since i was overseas. Then at 29 dec she told me he was starting to have rashes on his face and back. After taking him back on the 2nd dec i cleaned his cage and realised there were bugs that looked like small cockroaches in a cube toy made of popsicle sticks. So now im wondering if theres anything i can do to help him from it and whats the problem

Thanks for reaching out about Cheese and including photos. The facial lesions appear infected, so even if caused by parasites, antibiotics are probably recommended. A veterinary visit is needed to prescribe the proper antibiotic and dose.

My hamster smells bad and looks unwell. What's wrong, is it curable?

This presentation could be due to a trauma, a mass or a localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or mites). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. My hamster has red spots spreading on its skin. What should I do?

It could possibly be mange (mites in the hair follicles), ringworm (a fungal infection), or a bacterial skin infection. As ringworm is contagious to people and can spread rapidly, I recommend bringing your hamster to a vet for an examination and diagnostics based on the appearance of the lesions. In the meantime I would recommend handling your hamster with gloves and bathing with an antibacterial/antifungal shampoo such as Malaseb shampoo if you have access to this without a prescription where you live.

Hair loss and chewing at the skin could be an indication of a lesion (mites, bacterial, other) and being irritating and over-groomed. Most hamsters are nocturnal, so active at night. My hamster has red bugs. Are they mites? How do I get rid of them?

It sounds like Jabah has mites or lice. You will need to get him to the vet for an exam for a proper diagnosis. They can give you the correct treatment for this problem. Over the counter mite/lice remedies don't work. You will need something prescription strength. The bugs are red because they are sucking blood from Jabah. He can become anemic very quickly if you don't get this problem under control soon. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
