Is it normal for my hamster to poop a lot in its exercise ball?

It is not unusual for rabbits to defecate several times throughout the day - they are hind gut fermenters and therefore eat almost constantly, so they produce a lot of poop! As long as the feces is not soft/liquid, frequent passing of fecal balls is normal. If you are ever concerned that Khargi is sick or acting abnormal, Khargi should be evaluated by your veterinarian! You can always bring a fecal sample with you to the vet to be evaluated for any parasites. I hope this is helpful!

Hello there! Unfortunately for us, this is a very normal behavior for rodents. The medical term for poop-eating is coprophagy, and in hamsters, it's healthy for them to do so. Many animals, like rodents, that eat a mostly plant-based diet don't get all the nutrients from their food the first time it passes through their digestive system, so they literally digest it a second time by eating their feces. Hello, and congratulations on your new hamster! Baby hamsters are so small that you may not notice any urine that gets soaked up by the bedding. Poops will be very small at this age too, probably no larger than 1-2 mm in length. You can search through the bedding for these, but if Pebbles is eating and active, then I would not worry too much. Certainly if her energy or appetite decreases, I would then seek veterinary attention as she may not be feeling well. I hope this helps, and that Pebbles continues to do well!

This looks like normal poop to me. It could just be a difference in the type of food y'all feed or the way she digests it. Unless it becomes watery or not formed in pellets, then I wouldn't be worried. I hope this helps!

It sounds like Brizzo may be having diarrhea - which can be caused by intestinal parasites, or bacterial and viral infections. I recommend having Brizzo seen by a vet to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. While Brizzo is older, hamsters can live up to 2-3 years, and would benefit from treatment. While a running wheel or ball are great activities it doesn’t necessarily meet a hamster’s normal behavior to burrow. I recommend providing plenty of nesting material in both cages. You can also provide various tubes that encourage further burrowing or huts that allow for hiding and establishing a territory. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!
