My hamster has a head bump after escaping. Is it a tumor or injury?

I'd have Hamlet seen by a vet. Hamsters can be good at hiding pain, and he could be in pain even if he isn't showing obvious signs of it. I wouldn't take him in as an emergency tonight, but I would have him seen by a vet this week. I hope this helps!

I would need to see it to confirm but it is probably a tumor, in hamsters these tumors are usually malignant and not treatable, surgery is a possibility but it would personally not recommend it. other than that there is very little that can be done, if the lump ulcerates then antibiotic treatment can be attempted to treat the secondary infection.

I am sorry to hear about your hamster. With a swelling like this we would worry about a variety of problems including a cellulitis or inflammation/infection of the tissues, swelling due to trauma like a broken bone, swelling due to edema or disruption of lymph flow, or unfortunately a tumor. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine your hamster to determine the source of the swelling and the possible treatment options.

You can try to gently clean with warm water and a cotton tipped applicator, but don't rub too hard as these tumors can bleed a fair amount. If the scab comes out easy and it appears as pus, a veterinary visit is needed to prescribe otic and systemic antibiotics. If it seems like a mass (i.e. tumor), a veterinary visit is needed for this treatment. Good luck.

It has the appearance of an abscess or other infection. She likely needs antibiotics for treatment. These require an exam with your veterinarian before they can be dispensed. In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry. The most you can do is use diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) to cleanse the area daily. Monitor for lethargy or loss of appetite.

Hamsters can get papillomas (warts) or cancerous masses as well as skin infections. While removal is likely to be one of the best options, you should try to keep the area as clean as possible and look out for any bleeding or ulceration of the growth. I am sorry to hear about Trixie. Unfortunately without seeing her for an exam it is very difficult to determine the cause. Possibilities would include an abscess (pocket of infection), a tumor, or if she is outdoors at all or around flies we can also see a fly larvae called a cuterebra cause a swelling with a small hole (which the larvae breaths through). I would recommend an exam by a veterinarian because all of these things require examination to diagnose and treat.
