Why does my hamster have a bleeding lump with a hole near her bottom?

I can see a darker area on Rosie's bottom, but it is difficult to determine if the lump is actually protruding. Hamsters do have pretty prominent scent glands, and this may be due to poor grooming of the secretions. Older hamsters have a tendency to develop papillomas, which may be uncomfortable and can cause the trouble walking. You should have Rosie seen by a vet to determine exactly what the growth is, they may take a small sample with a fine needle to send off as a biopsy. In the meantime, keep a close eye on the area for increase in size or bleeding, as these are indications for an emergency visit. I hope all is well!

I would need to see it to confirm but it is probably a tumor, in hamsters these tumors are usually malignant and not treatable, surgery is a possibility but it would personally not recommend it. other than that there is very little that can be done, if the lump ulcerates then antibiotic treatment can be attempted to treat the secondary infection.

Hello there! I'm sorry to hear that Lily is not doing well. Bleeding from the rectal area can be caused by several issues. If you're sure the blood is coming from her rectum and not from her urethra or vagina, she may have an intestinal problem, like constipation or a parasite. It's also possible that she has a common hamster condition called wet tail, if she also has loose stools. Wet tail is severe diarrhea that is sometimes accompanied by bloody stools in certain severe cases, and is caused by a bacterial infection. It can be deadly, so acquiring treatment by a veterinarian is important to ensure survival. If the blood could be coming from the vaginal or urethral area, she could have a uterine or urinary tract infection that is causing the bleeding. These openings are very close to each other in female hamsters, so it can be easy to mistake one for the other. All of these conditions require the assistance of a veterinarian to get Lily better. If the bleeding is prolific of if Lily is also lethargic, she may need to be seen right away. I'm sorry to hear that Tracy isn't feeling well. Certainly the jump in temperature may have effected her, but good that you are working to fix that. Blood from the genital area is quite worrying. It may be that she is a little dehydrated with the heat and her stools are firmer causing a little bleeding. However, it could also indicate an issue in the intestinal tract such as infection. Likewise the blood could be coming from the vulva and be related to a urinary or even reproductive tract issue. Unless she is much improved today I would take her to the vet as she will likely require treatment that is not available at home.

I am so very sorry to hear of your concern for Snoopy. It is difficult for us to say without being able to palpate/feel the area. A tumor or cancer is possible but we could also possibly have an abscess or wound here- if he had somehow injured himself on his cage or if he is with another hamster who injured him. I think it is worth bringing Snoopy to a vet if you are able for an exam.

Hamsters can get papillomas (warts) or cancerous masses as well as skin infections. While removal is likely to be one of the best options, you should try to keep the area as clean as possible and look out for any bleeding or ulceration of the growth. Lumps can alwys be a tumor, a cyst, or an Abscess. When it is black and solid, it could be melanoma, when it is black and fluctuating, it could be a hematoma. Unfortunately without a photo and the ability to palpate the lump I cannot say which type it might be. However your vet will be able to tell, and if necessary he can determine the type of mass with a fine needle aspirate where a tissue sample is harvested with a very thin needle. Treatment varies depending on diagnosed condition.
