My hamster's poop is green. Should I be worried about its health?

This looks like normal poop to me. It could just be a difference in the type of food y'all feed or the way she digests it. Unless it becomes watery or not formed in pellets, then I wouldn't be worried. I hope this helps!

When female hamsters go through their reproductive cycle, they often will have a small about of discharge afterwards. This is a normal finding. However, with that said, the material is usually mucoid and yellow, and a bit thick. It should not be white, green, or have an odor to it. It also should not continue for multiple days. From the photo, it looked like the material was a bit white in color, which is concerning to me. Hamsters can get infections in their reproductive tract, and that would be my worry for Princess. I would recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian. Please do not clean the material off of her before taking her to the vet, as they will want to take a sample of the material to look at it under the microscope. This can allow them to tell if it is normal or an infection. I hope that gives you a place to start, and that Princess feels better soon.

Green stools could indicate an internal parasite infection. She may have had parasites all along or she may have contracted something from her prey. I personally don't think that stool looks all that abnormal/green. If I were you I would monitor her closely and if this type of stool continues then I would recommend you speak to a reptile veterinarian and have a fecal test done. For now, since she is eating and acting normally I would just monitor her closely. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thanks for reaching out about Gigi and Villi and including a photo. Green feces could be the result of the green food but also in common with liver disease. One mild concern would be a condition call chlamydophilosis, which can also be communicable to other birds and people. A veterinary visit is recommended anyways for any new acquisitions, and this disease should be tested. Monitor for now but see a veterinarian if the condition persists. Good luck.

It sounds like Nugget may have a GI infection or other GI irritation ongoing that is causing her symptoms. Since she is having severe diarrhea and isn't improving with home treatment, it would be best to bring her into your vet. They can prescribe an antibiotic or other medication as needed to help. Keeping her bottom and any bedding clean and free from her stool can also help reduce irritation and the spread of any bacteria.

Hi there! While diarrhea in new gerbils is not entirely unusual (as stress and food changes can cause soft stool), I am concerned about the combination of continued diarrhea and the green coloration. Unless you have been feeding Peach a large amount of green-colored food, green coloration usually indicates a large amount of bile released in the intestines, and this can indicate a disease process. A common diarrheal disease of Gerbils is called Tyzzer's disease, and it can cause fatal dehydration if not treated. I'm glad to hear that Peach is still eating, drinking, and acting normal, but if the diarrhea continues or if his attitude changes, I strongly suggest taking him to the vet as he may require antibiotic treatment and fluid replacement therapy. This condition may also be contagious, so keep a close eye on the other gerbils for similar symptoms.
