My old hamster has sticky yellow poop and is inactive. What's wrong?

Intestinal infections and parasites can cause rectal/colonic bleeding, leading to illness. A fecal examination under the microscope can determine the type of parasite and the specific treatment. It sounds like Brizzo may be having diarrhea - which can be caused by intestinal parasites, or bacterial and viral infections. I recommend having Brizzo seen by a vet to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. While Brizzo is older, hamsters can live up to 2-3 years, and would benefit from treatment. These signs could be compatible with an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver), which is a very concerning sign in hamsters. He should be examined by your veterinarian. If he has "wet tail" (proliferative ileitis), he will need treatment and supportive care. Keep his cage clean. Change bedding daily if necessary. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible. Discontinue feeding any treats, fruits or vegetables until he recovers.
