Why is my new parakeet's poop green and mushy? Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

We have a pair of male parakeets now 10 days. They seem to adjust just fine, but yesterday we noticed the older one doesn't let younger one eat seeds how much he'd want to. Today I found out half of the poops (from the younger parrot) are green! Not really watery, they look more like porridge-consistency but definitely far from the normal. The younger parrot did try a little bit of green paprika yesterday, but the amount he ate was minimal. What else could be the reason of this discharge??

Thanks for reaching out about Gigi and Villi and including a photo. Green feces could be the result of the green food but also in common with liver disease. One mild concern would be a condition call chlamydophilosis, which can also be communicable to other birds and people. A veterinary visit is recommended anyways for any new acquisitions, and this disease should be tested. Monitor for now but see a veterinarian if the condition persists.
Good luck.
