My guinea pig stopped breathing, what if vets are all closed?

I am so sorry that your guinea pig is having this problem. Since she is so young, it could be a congenital malformation/disease or possibly an infection. You could take her to a veterinarian for an examination to try to determine the cause and see if any treatment would help. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do at home without veterinary care. So sorry.

Unfortunately, from what you describe it sounds like he is in very serious condition - these symptoms are signs of very severe illness that could be caused by almost anything. I would be concerned that he may die soon without immediate treatment, so I would recommend taking him to the vet right away to find out what's wrong and see if anything can be done to help him.

unfortunately there is very little you can do at home to help him, this problem will require a diagnosis first and medications to treat it. all you can do to keep him comfortable is to make sure he is neither too hot nor too cold, keep him at a comfortable room temperature (usually cold is more of an issue when a guinea pig is unwell).

I am sorry to hear about Pea. If she is consistently having heavy breathing with noticable body movement likely due to the effort I would recommend bringing her in to see the vet. She could have something like a respiratory infection that requires treatment, and with respiratory difficulty the sooner we address the problem the better the chance of a fast and full recovery!

I am so sorry! Since it has been a few days she may still heal on her own. I am concerned though that she may have a broken rib or puncture lung since she is breathing heavily. I wish I had a great home care treatment for her but it sounds like she needs extensive medical care to ease her pain and help her heal. You could call the vet that saw her and see if they can prescribe any pain meds or additional pain meds to help her. Plus without seeing her and knowing exactly what is going on, it is hard for me to give any recommendations. If she is continuing to suffer and treatment isn't an option, you may want to consider humane euthanasia so she doesn't continue to suffer. I'm sorry and I hope she starts to heal.

Hi there! I am so sorry to hear about Charles' accident. I would definitely have Charles checked out by his veterinarian. There is definitely a chance that he could have some internal injuries. He may need an exam to check his lungs, and even an Xray, just to make sure there isn't anything else abnormal going on. As you mentioned too, I'm sure Charles is a little bit shaken up from his accident. These small guinea pigs are prey animals and are normally a little bit stressed out anyway. Having an accident may have made him a little bit nervous, but his comfort level with you will return in a little bit of time. No, I am afraid you cannot shine a light up a guinea pig's nose and you would need special instruments to remove a foreign body from the upper airways. If you think your guinea pig has a blocked airway, you need to take it to an emergency room or out of hour's veterinarian right away for help. Please do not experiment by yourself.
