My guinea pig fell. Why is he breathing hard and biting me?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male

My guinea pig fell from my arm after jumping off of me last night. He is walking normal and doesn't seem to have any external injuries, but he is making a jackhammer like sound, biting me, and running from me even more. I notices that one nostril seems to be working harder than the other when he breathes. Is this a sign of internal injuries or is he just not trusting me right now?

Hi there! I am so sorry to hear about Charles' accident. I would definitely have Charles checked out by his veterinarian. There is definitely a chance that he could have some internal injuries. He may need an exam to check his lungs, and even an Xray, just to make sure there isn't anything else abnormal going on. As you mentioned too, I'm sure Charles is a little bit shaken up from his accident. These small guinea pigs are prey animals and are normally a little bit stressed out anyway. Having an accident may have made him a little bit nervous, but his comfort level with you will return in a little bit of time. I would definitely take him in for an exam though, just to make sure everything is OK. I hope this answer was helpful. Best of luck!
