My baby guinea pig has green eye discharge and is losing weight.

I have 5, 3 day old Guinea pigs and some of them have this green sticky discharge that is on there eyes and are causing them to not be able to open them Without me damping my finger with warm water and then gently wiping there eyes. One of them in particular has to have it done everyday and has started to show abnormal behaviour such as not following the rest of them or the mother around sitting in the corner on its own and has started to become very skinny and will only go to mum if next to her

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear some of the babies are unwell. Green sticky discharge from the eyes are suggestive of an eye infection. I would recommend getting them to a vet within the next 24 hours, where they can prescribe appropriate antibiotic eye drops. The one that is losing weight may have a more serious systemic infection that requires additional medications.

In the meantime, keep the environment clean by changing the dirty bedding daily. Bring the mum close to the babies, especially the sick ones, to encourage them to nurse. Keep them in a warm, non-drafty environment.

He needs to be seen as soon as possible by your local veterinarian. Unfortunately the signs you are describing are quite severe and concerning and possibly a gastrointestinal inflammation/infection is present. I would recommend an immediate check up, radiographs, antibiotics and supportive treatment (fluidtherapy) are required.

However, other, nonspecific signs such as pain, can also cause reluctance to eat. Bandit may have an eye infection or corneal ulcer, which is causing him some discomfort. I recommend having him seen by a vet, who can file his teeth if necessary, and determine exactly what is going on with his eye. I hope this helps and that all is well!

The veterinarian will use an ophthalmic scope to evaluate the eyes. He will likely need an eye drop or ointment. Is he sneezing or having any other signs of disease? If so, he could have an upper respiratory tract infection and may need an antibiotic. I hope this information helps!

It sounds as Uzi is suffering from an eye infection, it is relatively common in guinea pigs. you will need to take him to the vet the first chance you get, the vet will check the eyes to make sure there is no damage or foreign body in it, if it is indeed a simple eye infection your vet will prescribe an antibiotic eye drops that will probably solve the problem in no time.

Guinea pig has crusty, milky eyes and squints. Is it an infection?

Mochi's eye does look like there is infection. Have her examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. She will likely need antibiotics if infection is diagnosed. Use a warm washcloth to gently clean the eye, change bedding frequently to minimize irritating dust. If you are using pine or cedar shavings, immediately clean the cage and use aspen shavings or recycled paper bedding. The cedar can be irritating and may cause liver disease.
