My guinea pig bit his bandage with Neosporin. Is it dangerous?

thanks for reaching out about Ms. Piggy. Do not place topical antibiotics such as neosporin on it as this can be toxic if ingested. Flour or baking soda can be used topically to help form a clot. Materials such as Quik Stop, used for bleeding toe nails is also caustic and will hurt/burn. If there is a mass there, a veterinary visit is needed as cysts or tumors are not uncommon on the ears. Most of the oral meds are on prescription and should be discussed with your local veterinarian. Disinfection of the skin may be achieved at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Licking off a small amount of neosporin should not harm Theo. If he continues to lick/chew his paws you may want to take him to the vet to be assessed for allergies. Licking/chewing the feet is a common sign of a dog having an environmental allergy (like to dust, grasses and pollens). I hope this helps. Thanks for reaching out about Midnight and including a photo. This is a wound and not something contagious from the cat. Could be a bite or scratch though. Neosporin can cause serious harm if ingested by the chinchilla, so DO NOT APPLY. Do not allow a dust bath. You can gently clean with warm water and a mild soap, but agree this needs veterinary attention tomorrow for at least minor wound care (shave to remove hair from contaminating the wound) and oral antibiotics. I am sorry to hear about your guinea pig! You are correct in that we don't normally prescribe Penicillin products in guinea pigs as they can kill the normal healthy bacteria in the GI tract leading to severe GI problems. I would recommend contacting your vet to see if they have other antibiotics available. In the US we most often use a drug called Baytril (enrofloxacin) or Tribrissen (trimethoprim sulfadiazine). Perhaps your vet does have other drug options available.

I actually would not recommend putting anything topical on it if he can potentially lick it off. Neosporin is not particularly toxic if a small amount is ingested but it won't have a chance to work if your dog is licking. I'd recommend putting an e-collar on him to keep him from licking. If there is a raw spot or other skin lesion it would be a good idea to have your vet take a look - he might need oral medications for it to resolve. I doubt he would need anesthesia unless there is a skin growth that is there.
