My gerbil won't exercise. Are exercise balls safe to use?

Thanks for reaching out. One, larger animals won't fit in the ball. 2. You do need to monitor so that toe nails are safe, but this rarely happens. 3. Ventilation is not good but they don't spend much time in it, so should be okay.

Guinea pigs may be too large to play inside a ball, but you can still set up a safe activity area outside of their cage environment with the use of an X-pen or other foldable gates. You can then fill that area with toys to play with and chew on, hay to munch on, and other fun activities. This can help your piggies stretch and get a little exercise while still being safe and staying out of areas that may cause harm.

That poses a particular problem but I am glad to hear that it has resolved. i would recommend keeping a good eye on your hamster for recurrence of problems. I would be worried about some type of spinal trauma, such as a back injury or stroke. It is encouraging that it has resolved but keep an eye on the situation. Hamster balls can be good exercise but is probably not for every hamster. If you think it is more stressful, don't put him in it. There are hamster wheels that are open and might be less stressful.

While a running wheel or ball are great activities it doesn’t necessarily meet a hamster’s normal behavior to burrow. I recommend providing plenty of nesting material in both cages. In most instances a cage is recommended over an aquarium for small mammals because there can be inadequate ventilation with glass aquariums and ammonia from the urine can build up within the cage and cause respiratory problems. A wire cage with small bar spacing is often recommended with a thick layer of paper bedding (such as Carefresh bedding) and plenty of areas to climb and hide.

Great question! They make large balls (like hamster balls but bigger) for guinea pigs. You can also put him in a a large area like the kitchen or even a kids swimming pool (empty) when you feed him. Sprinkle the food around so that he has to run around to get to his food. These things helped my guinea pig lose weight and I hope it helps Chico too!

I would not recommend taking a Gerbil into the snow. It can be difficult for a small mammal to stay warm in cold conditions. Also if the gerbil was raised inside it will not be use to the cold weather. I hope that helps
