My hamster had trouble walking. Is a hamster ball safe for them?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male

Hi, a day or two ago my hamster wasn’t able to walk and his body was beating as if it was a heart, it’s hard to explain but it seemed like he was beating. The hamster hasn’t showed any symptoms and seems perfect normal now but is it something to worrry about? Also, is a hamster ball good for a hamster? It’s hard to tell whether a hamster is having fun or is stressed out.

That poses a particular problem but I am glad to hear that it has resolved. i would recommend keeping a good eye on your hamster for recurrence of problems.
I would be worried about some type of spinal trauma, such as a back injury or stroke. It is encouraging that it has resolved but keep an eye on the situation.
Hamster balls can be good exercise but is probably not for every hamster. If you think it is more stressful, don't put him in it. There are hamster wheels that are open and might be less stressful.
