Is this irritated black dot on my ferret's genitals a tick?

Thanks for reaching out about Loki and including photos. Could be a spider bite or other injury? Concerned that the black area is dead (necrotic) tissue. A veterinary visit is recommended, even though does not seem painful. Some spider bites contain toxins that can spread. Histiocytomas are other common dermal lesions but are usually very pruritic. Hi there! It's hard to tell from the picture but it does look like Loco might have a little scrape or scab on his chin. It may be due to irritation from his bath or trauma if he has been scratching at it. Keep a close eye on it - if it spreads or worsens, swells, seems painful, or begins oozing, take him back in to see your veterinarian. You can gently clean it with warm water and try to apply some Neo-Sporin but Loco may rub it off! Good luck and I hope Loco feels better soon!

If you look at it closely, you should be able to see legs if it is a tick. I cannot tell because when I enlarge the photo it gets too blurry. The other options as to what it could be is a cyst or a tumor. I really think you need to have him to your vet for an exam. It is better to be safe than sorry. I would be happy to provide a consultation and take a look at some photos. If you notice that the spot becomes larger, changes shape, or starts bleeding, you should have him examined by a vet as soon as possible. Your vet can take a sample from the region to determine exactly what it is.

Based on the pictures, it does not look like a tick. It looks like a skin mass. Have your vet take a look at him to determine exactly what it is. Your vet may want to aspirate or biopsy to diagnose.

Thank you for your question. From your photo, it appears that Bear has a small skin infection. I recommend cleaning it with warm soapy water. You can carefully trim the hair around the lesion to make it easier to clean. Since you just noticed this, it is hard to say if it is something that has been there and is healing, or if it will get worse. I recommend keeping it clean through the weekend and using a cone or e-collar to keep Bear from licking the area. You can apply a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice a day. If it isn't getting better, you should call your veterinarian on Monday to have it evaluated and see if antibiotics are needed. Make sure you wash your hands after you have touched the wound.
